Names too 'posh' or 'toffy' for one of our family?

Notyetamummy · 21/11/2010 18:18

I have run our baby girl name suggestions by some of my family members and my Nana specifically thinks that the names that I like are 'too posh'.

To start with I don't agree. Also - who cares if a name is posh if we like it?

Our top girls names are:

Clara
Adeline
Elsa
Matilda
Elizabeth

What do you all think?

Lovely names.

I think you should also add Crispin and Quentin to your list.

TheBolter · 21/11/2010 21:24

Forgot a Grin there.

maktaitai · 21/11/2010 21:27

Hmm, could your Nana have meant 'too posh for you', i.e. she thinks you are a bit of a chav and have ideas above your station?

Wink

I have a Quentin and we are definately not posh Smile. And I don't really understand the obsession with 'labelling' names.
I think the op's names are lovely by the way, I particularly like Clara and Esla.

TheBolter · 21/11/2010 22:15

Sorry eva Smile. I would say Quentin a little too 'out there' in a lefty liberal way to be truly posh.

(Hoping I haven't now insulted a die-hard Tory right winger Grin)

evamummy · 21/11/2010 22:27

Its ok, Bolter Smile. We're a German/French family so get all sorts of associations - from thre French who find it dull (as it's been in the top 10 for a number of years) to the Germans who only think Tarantino...

Ellie-Faye? Cripes.

It sounds like mispronounced French.

DancingThroughLife · 22/11/2010 18:57

I think your names are lovely.

I also don't get this name labelling thing. We love DD's name, it was the only girl's name we both liked more than any other name too.

On MN some consider it a 'chav' name. My grandparents all thought it was posh. Just goes to show. I think it's all relative anyway, and if you like the names, that's all that really matters.

In RL I know an Elsa, Clara and Elizabeth (which is DD's middle name). And I'm not from a particularly 'posh' area.

What are your boys names? Or don't you need them Wink

Ineedsomesleep · 22/11/2010 19:14

Love all your names and don't think they are posh, just classic.

As for negative reactions in the family, just keep schtum until LO arrives. They'd have to be very rude to voice their concerns once you introduce your lovely LO.

sarahscot · 22/11/2010 19:21

Isla-Mai??? Hee hee. As in Isle of May?

mathanxiety · 22/11/2010 19:28

What's next?
Honi-soit?
Maly-pense?

Sailor, Taylor, Parker, ... why?

Komondor · 24/11/2010 10:26

All lovely names. Definitely not too posh.

ThatllDoPig · 24/11/2010 10:40

Not posh, just classic. Go for it.
Is Adeline pronounced Ada-line
or Ada-leen?

lilmary · 06/12/2010 09:55

What's wrong with posh??? Better posh than chavvy! Would you see a doctor or hire a lawyer called Candy or Summer?

Personally, I don't think they're posh, just good old-fashioned, pretty, feminine names.

flopsy1974 · 06/12/2010 15:47

The names on your list are lovely it's nice to see a good list of classic names.

ValiumSingleton · 06/12/2010 15:50

That list is quite normal. I thought you were going to say Octavia and Ptolemy.

And those would be too posh for my kids!

discobeaver · 06/12/2010 18:40

I have never heard of Ptolemy! Sounds like a religious sect.

A posh boy's name - Peregrine?

NinkyNonker · 06/12/2010 20:49

Definitely not posh.

NinkyNonker · 06/12/2010 20:50

Oh, and Elsa or Matilda gets my vote. Elsa has it by a nose I think.

tammytoby · 06/12/2010 21:20

"What's wrong with posh??? Better posh than chavvy! Would you see a doctor or hire a lawyer called Candy or Summer?"

Excactly - why are people in the UK so worried about a name being too posh... Hmm.

NinkyNonker · 06/12/2010 21:43

Yep, too 'posh' never a concern here!
