Edward, Teddy, Ted, Eddie... thoughts please...

I have always loved the name Edward but have never been too keen on any of the abreviations... Many threads seem to love Ted or Teddy as a nickname when younger - thoughts please and does this name stick when growing older?

I think it's a lovely name, and I am quite partial to names that you can have a variety of nn options as it feels like you can give some control to the child over what they are called. As for a nickname sticking I think it really depends on whether the child likes it or not, it really isn't that unusual for people to be called one thing by their families and another thing by their friends.

Edward was the name we were going to call our 4 month old if she had been a boy. love it. We would have stuck with Edward as a child and let the usage of nicknames take it's natural course as he got older among his friends.

Oh,furry one, I agree. I also had a bit of a crush on Andrew Lincoln, and it endured through 'Teachers' too. Where is he now, I wonder?

I have an Edmund who is usually called Eddie or Ed. I do confess to the occasional use of Eddie-baby and Eddie-bear. Never liked Ted.

I like Teddy but for Theodore not Edward. The 'Teddy Bear' was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. I think Little Ted is very cute for a baby and Teddy for a young boy though he would definately be Ted to his mates by the time they hit secondary school.

I like the name Edward but all the adult Edwards i know are called Ed which is not so nice.

My dh is an Edward. His mother wanted him to be called Ned...didn't happen. People called him Ed or Eddie. I always use Edward. I really don't like to use Eddie.

Just a warning that the nickname you like, might not be used by his friends.

I love it, shortened to Woody.

I have a Ted. Not v keen on Edward/Edmund/Edgar so he is 'just' Ted on birth certificate. I would've gone for Theodore but wouldn't want DS deciding he was Theo rather than Ted, so we thought we'd keep it as straightforward as possible.

Don't really call him Teddy (although he is only 3mo so there's still time). I quite like the idea of a really simple name with no messing around.

I never heard Teddy used for Edward... Eddy surely. Ted/Teddy is short form for Theodore, Theodoros (Greek), Feyodor (Russian) or sometime Theophilos (Greek).

I prefer Edward...

My baby dgs is Edward and calls himself Ed though the family like Ted.The trouble is that he is nuts about Tractor Ted dvd's so if you call him Ted he says 'Watch it!'and sings the Tractorland song!So he will be Ed or Edward I think.

Mmmmm I can't really stand, Teddy, Ted or Ned.

Edward is such a wonderfully classic name, IMO think it's a shame to nn a child anything other than Ed or Eddie.

Thank you everybody for all of your fantastic advice. It really has helped and Edward is still top of the list! The other boys name we also love is Charles so I'm going to start a new thread on that so your thoughts would be hugely welcome. Thanks again, Mr & Mrs Teapot.

I already have a Theodore (Theo most of the time) and we're considering Edwin for the second - probably Eddy, but it did strike me that if he ended up as a Ted, that might be a bit odd because Ted is also a shortening of Theodore. Confused But does it matter? Unless both boys decide they're going to be Teds when they're older! Grin
