Well I love it Smile was on my short list but DP hated it we ended up with Robyn. He reckoned people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. My argument was only stupid people would struggle a bit snobby on my behalf I think though Smile

waltonsmountain · 10/11/2010 03:00

Beautiful. But Dh wasn't so happy with it. It was in my top 3. So unusual and lovely.
What does it mean again?
'zan' or 'thea' for short?

Stardown · 10/11/2010 03:42

Sorry I know it is a favourite on here but I'm not too keen. I think it sounds very harsh on the tongue, although a part of me really WANTS to like it.

Stardown · 10/11/2010 03:43

I'm pretty sure it means blonde?

ttalloo · 10/11/2010 04:58

It does indeed mean blonde, stardown.

I have a cousin called Xanthe, who I don't like, but even so I think the name is lovely.

Doozie · 10/11/2010 05:08

I like it! Beautiful, different but not wacky. DH doesn't for some non reason.

It is a gorgeous name and is no1 on my list if we have a girl next time.

My only concern is that it seems to be getting more and more popular - I wouldn't really want it to do a "Ruby"....

eviscerateyourmemory · 10/11/2010 08:42

I think that it is a lovely name.

If you look here: baby names

at the statistics for 2009, it was the 664th most popular name, with 55 babies being called Xanthe, so popular on mumsnet, but a long way off being a 'Ruby'

Bumperlicious · 10/11/2010 08:51

Think it's lovely. I did think of you when I saw this ladyintheradiator (hope you are doing ok btw).

BuntyPenfold · 10/11/2010 09:08

I love it.

smother · 10/11/2010 09:20

really really lovely. and what about:

Delphi
Saskia
Thea
Anthena
Helena

Although I think Xanthe is nicer....

ScarlettButler · 10/11/2010 09:48

I love Xanthe - DP has vetoed but I would have it in a heartbeat

Rhubarbgarden · 10/11/2010 11:20

Not fond. A bit try too hard.

flaine · 10/11/2010 12:34

Xanthe is gorgeous, beautiful and lovely in every way possible. Choose Xanthe Smile

Tamasine · 10/11/2010 13:24

I'm not asking this to be rude Rhubarb, but genuinely interested - what do you mean when you say it's try too hard? Too hard for what?

allset · 10/11/2010 15:07

Tamasine - this is a concern of mine whtever we choose, when we had DD1 we gave her a name that was pretty and unusual and it has since rocketed in popularity
We have also considered Thea and while we both like it we don't love it
DH likes Josie, I am not sure
We both really liked Myla, but now concerns over underwear and sex toys connotations
I really like Xanthe, and Delphi actually, but DH is less keen on it this morning than he was yesterday - he thinks too unusual

Love it - shortlist for DD but she arrived with a headful of brown hair so we crossed it off the list!

Rhubarbgarden · 10/11/2010 18:59

I mean it sounds a bit like you are trying too hard to be different or quirky. But then I tend to feel that about many names beginning with x or z.

Tamasine · 10/11/2010 21:25

Thanks Rhubarb

Allset - exactly, would be just my like for it to suddenly soar in popularity (like Ruby did in that it went from nothing to really popular in about 5 years)!

I really like Theadora actually (nn Teddy being v sweet) but my DH has said his grumpy gran was called Dora (which I actually rather like) which rules it out.

Delphi is very pretty too! And Myla is nice although I guess the underwear connection makes it harder to choose (although I think it is nice underwear??)

God I love name discussions! Can't wait to get pregnant with no 3 and join in properly (although am bound to have another boy!!)

QueeferSutherBANG · 10/11/2010 23:07

I love it.
I wish I had called dd Xanthe.

lilly13 · 13/11/2010 09:27

I think it is an awful name if you intend to live in the UK. If you intend to live in Greece or Cyprus - surely, why not?? I have the same view on Elpitha, Athena, Makrina, Constandina, etc. Sorry!

rachel1970 · 13/11/2010 14:54

How do you pronounce it: X-antee, X-anthee, Zan-thee, Zan-tee..?

MsTownmouse · 13/11/2010 18:23

We had friends who called their daughter Xanthe & Dh said - It sounds like a Citroen. Not my view but for what it's worth .

freerangeeggs · 13/11/2010 19:31

It's a fantastic name and I would be jealous if I ever met a Xanthe.

Delphi is quite cool too...
