Both me and DH love he name and it works with our Sirname really well and we are not into middle names so it wont be to long but its in a baby name book as having 'unfortunate' knicknames?

Not to sound dull but we have been racking our brains and cant come up with any that are not nice so can someone please show us the error of our ways?!

Thanks x

It's lovely. Can't think of any unfortunate nns offhand. :)

HSMM · 08/11/2010 21:43

My Godmother's children were called Harmione and Blanche and I called them Harmony and Branch, but apart from that it's really lovely

Skyrg · 08/11/2010 21:47

It is a lovely name, however... I think the Harry Potter connection is very strong. She was too much of a main character and it wasn't much known before that, so I think people will definitely associate it with the HP character.
I expect that would be the source of most teasing.

CharlieBoo · 08/11/2010 22:47

Yes very strong Harry Potter reference. It's quite a dull name in my opinion though...sorry

darksideofthemooncup · 08/11/2010 22:54

I love it and would have liked to use it for my dd but it wouldn't go with my surname. I don't really think of the Harry Potter connection but with the David Bowie song 'letter to Hermione'.

Goingspare · 08/11/2010 22:58

I'm quite interested to find out what the unfortunate nicknames are.

We have a guinea pig named after Hermione Granger, but don't let that put you off.

Guacamole · 08/11/2010 23:03

I can't think of any unfortunate nicknames for Hermione Confused.

Bumperlicious · 08/11/2010 23:47

I really like it and wanted it for dd2 but dh said no.

nooka · 09/11/2010 05:34

At a guess Moany?

Pre Harry Potter I would have thought the biggest issue would be spelling and pronunciation. Post Harry Potter I would have thought the biggest issue was Harry Potter Grin It is going to be a very strong association, although possibly only for you as parents (ie everyone will assume that's what inspired you). Hopefully buy the time your dd is old enough to care Harry Potter will be forgotten about, but with two films to come it's very much in the public perception still.

ThatllDoPig · 09/11/2010 11:09

I think its a lovely name, and you shouldn't worry about the HP connection. Just think how many Harrys are out there!

Rocketbird · 09/11/2010 11:11

The Harry Potter association wouldn't bother me, especially as Hermione is a good guy. I suspect you'd have more issues if you were considering Voldemort or Slytherin :o And ThatllDoPig is right about Harry.

I can't think of any unfortunate nicknames either. It would slightly bug me that some dimwits people don't know how to pronounce it which always makes me Shock as it's not exactly unheard of. But it wouldn't stop me using the name if it was my bag.

Indith · 09/11/2010 11:15

It has the strong Harry Potter connection but in another year the final part of the final film will be out and the mania will be over and done with (I think most of the mania has already gone really) so I don't think there would be too much Harry Potter teasing growing up. It is a lovely name.

chaya5738 · 09/11/2010 11:22

I think it is a lovely name. The HP connection would worry me a bit but I reckon Indith is right - the mania will die down soon and definitely by the time she is at school.

And anyway, the Hermoine character is a great one - clever and pretty

seeker · 09/11/2010 11:27

I know a Hermione wha is known as Mi - pronounced My.

It's lovely.

YummyorSlummy · 09/11/2010 11:37

Nooka please don't say Harry Potter will be forgotten about! Shock(quivering bottom lip)

B52s · 09/11/2010 12:19

I first thought of 'A Winter's Tale'. Beautiful name. Don't worry about nicknames, could be anything, H, Hermy, or anything else to do with DD appearance/ traits.

LadyCressida · 09/11/2010 12:30

Don't be put off by HP - she is a lovely character and anyway it has helped people pronounce it properly!

I love it and can't think of any bad nns but DD has it as a middle name rather than first name because I couldn't think of any nice nn's either!

cowboylover · 09/11/2010 13:19

Thanks everyone. If Moaney is the nn we could think of I'm happy with that!!

My name Is long and doesn't shorten to anything so im not that worried it doesn't shorten easily

I think Hermione is lovely. I've only known one who is in her teens now and it suited her. Agree by the time she is in school there will have been several other crazes to replace HP.

hobbgoblin · 09/11/2010 14:38

my eldest dd is hermione - she gets called miney, mine and mi.

the worst is when people think it's Armani. As if!!!

We named DD almost 11 years ago and people think because of HP but i think the 1st book was only just written and i'd never heard of it but people do assume. DD looks like the HP movie hermione too! It's not a bad association.

People do still struggle with spelling or pronounciation (less often) if reading her name before hearing.

Sometimes on the phone I'll say (to assist in spelling/understanding) "as in Harry Potter" and people still seem baffled so it can't be that strongly associated I guess!

Some cool namesakes too - Hermione Gingold for example.

cashmere · 09/11/2010 15:12

In the 70s my Mum taught a Hermi 1!

Stardown · 09/11/2010 15:27

I agree don't be put off by Harry Potter - our son is having the middle name Ollivander and we've got nothing but lovely compliments on it.

ThatllDoPig · 12/11/2010 15:16

But doesn't he end up a death eater stardown?! Grin only joking btw.
