What do you guys think, for our daughter?

Per-seph-o-nie

It's from Greek mythology & is commonly spelt Persephone - but a lot of people tend to pronounce it wrong if they've never heard it before.

I think it is a difficult name for a child to have if she lives in the west... If you plan to live in Greece or Cyprus, why not? Go for it!

Hulababy · 10/11/2010 13:05

Most people will only need telling once how to spell it.

I thnk you should spell it correctly if you are going to use it.

I like the nn.

The full name isn't totally my choice personally, but if you like it use it.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2010 16:24

You will only succeed in looking ignorant if you spell it wrong -- and other people will still manage to pronounce it wrong no matter how much you pander to them.

Sephy sounds a bit like a skin condition. I know one whose nn is 'Purr'.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 10/11/2010 18:09

I like it spelled properly. People know how to pronounce Penelope and Phoebe so I think they'll manage with Persephone.

Rhubarbgarden · 10/11/2010 18:46

Awful. Sorry.

upahill · 10/11/2010 18:48

NO I really don't like it.

pointydog · 10/11/2010 18:59

Not keen.

cumbria81 · 11/11/2010 16:06

It's absolutely ridiculous

PfftTheMildySpookyDragon · 11/11/2010 16:14

I love it, wanted it for DD (settled on Penelope). But FGS spell it correctly, there is no point having a name like that if you aren't going to use the correct spelling.

People will misspell all names. My name is very common (think along the line of Jane) and gets spelled incorrectly regularly.

Someone wrote DD's name as "Panelipy" the other day Hmm

crumpet · 11/11/2010 16:17

Ha - was just about to suggest Penelope but was beaten to it. Persephone is a lovely name - I considered both but only put Penelope on the short list (and then had ds...)

finnmum · 11/11/2010 17:18

Personally quite horrendous to me as 'perse' is one of the worst words in Finnish language:D

KittyBigglesworth · 12/11/2010 01:03

Be aware that some name books state that it means 'bringer of death'. Others give further detail of the myth.

I think there has been a small jump in the popularity of this name which I suspect may be due, even subliminally, to Monica Bellucci's character in the film called Matrix Reloaded (2003). She is essentially an evil Jessica Rabbit-type character, albeit wearing beige leather rather than a dazzling red dress. Seductive and deadly, hence the character's name!

I should think her character stuck in quite a few men's minds without them pondering the name's meaning too! Her lips, the hips, the accent; too much distraction for an Englishman to concentrate on that and dusty classical mythology at the same time. Heck, even I found her a welcome distraction from the boredom of sci-fi.

I would immediately think you were a bit pretentious for calling your child that. I'm sure you're not at all. But that's what I would think.

PfftTheMildySpookyDragon · 12/11/2010 13:42

Not everyone cares about the meaning of a name though.

FranSanDisco · 12/11/2010 13:47

If I met you and you introduced Persephone I would think you were up yourself quite frankly. Geographically it just wouldn't work where I live. Would it work where you live? That's what you need to consider imho.

PfftTheMildySpookyDragon · 12/11/2010 14:17

That's alright - I think those with a Persephone don't move in the same cirles as those that say "up yourself"

FranSanDisco · 12/11/2010 15:10

Cirles ??? No I don't move in those Confused. Are they summit posh? Grin

ThatllDoPig · 12/11/2010 15:13

I think it's lovely, but agree with others that you should use the original spelling. Don't 'dumb down' a beautiful name, people will just have to learn it!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 12/11/2010 15:36

It sounds nice but a) the spelling is wrong, and you should stick with the proper spelling.

Persephone was the innocent daughter of Demeter and Zeus, Hades stole her away and Demeter wept and neglected the Earth grieving for her daughter. Zeus made Hades give Persephone back as the world turned to winter but Hades tricked Persephone into eating some pomegranate seeds, so she had to stay. Because Demeter begged so hard and Zeus was concerned about the neglect of the Earth, he agreed to let Persephone spend 6 months on Earth with her mother, when she came to Earth, Demeter attended her duties and the summer returned, and when she went back to Hades, winter descended. An old, old myth of the changing seasons.

PfftTheMildySpookyDragon · 12/11/2010 16:12

Grin Fran, dunno Grin

finnmum · 12/11/2010 21:47

Oh please, I do have to spell it now! 'Perse' translates to 'arse' in Finnish, albeit more vulgar (if possible:). We Finnish use this word as rare as you use c word. So, naming your dear daughter 'Cohie' will leave at least 6 million Europeans horrified!Grin
