It's a nice name in flemish but it won't be pronounced correctly in english.

What about:

Jonah
Jonas (both versions of John)
Jorick (George)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 04/11/2010 11:57

That makes 2 of us. I was at school with someone called Jan - pronounced Yan - his mother was Czech - but I think people would mis-pronounced it if they saw it written, but not if they heard it, iykwim?

misdee · 04/11/2010 11:58

it would be Yan.

I would call him Yan, but imagine his friends would call him Jan or Janet. I know how cruel children can be.

tummytickler · 04/11/2010 12:06

I used to go to a college with a Jan. Lovely name and everyone pronounced it correctly.
dd goes to school with a Jan and he has no problems as far as i am aware.
i think it is lovely.

bigbluebump · 04/11/2010 12:14

Jan (pronounced Yan) is quite a popular boys name in Germany. I really like it!

DandyDan · 04/11/2010 12:15

Yan - recalling Jan from The Silver Sword.

Slambang · 04/11/2010 12:18

Jan (spelt Can) is a Turkish boy's name

BangingNoise · 04/11/2010 12:20

I would say Ian becuase my unclue (who was Polish) was known as Ian but it was spelt Jan. His parents pronounced it differently, possible Yan.

BangingNoise · 04/11/2010 12:20

And unclue? I mean uncle of course.

oncemoreintothebreach · 04/11/2010 12:21

I'd pronounce it Yan. We're a Polish family and I have no end of relations called Janek!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 04/11/2010 12:26

I'd like an 'unclue', myself!

anonymousbird · 04/11/2010 12:30

I would say Yan, if I knew it was a boy's name, as I know a male Jan and it is Yan (Dutch-German)

coatgate · 04/11/2010 12:32

We have a lovely Polish decorator called Jan (Yan).

kveta · 04/11/2010 12:44

I'd pronounce it Yan - but am married to a czech, so I have started pronouncing all Js as Ys in names - it's a bit ridiculous, when I saw the Judith written somewhere, I started saying 'Yu-dith'...

In Czech, Jan is almost always called Honza though :)

edeluna · 04/11/2010 13:54

I'd say [yan] because I know German, but if that's the pronunciation you're going for and you live in an English-speaking country, you (and your child) will probably spend a lot of time explaining or correcting the pronunciation.

We've ruled out a bunch of names because we're afraid they'd be slaughtered in English.

Rocketbird · 04/11/2010 13:56

Yan. Went to school with one and not aware of any issues, even back in the unenlightened seventies!

Bue · 05/11/2010 16:55

Definitely Yan.

Ishouldhavechosenagoldfish · 06/11/2010 08:51

Here in the deepest Westcountry it may well be Jaan. As in Jan (John) Stewer, for all those fans .of Victorian comedy literature out there Grin But I do also know a Yan, being quite cosmopolitan really ...
