What do you think of it? I love it but DH doesn't. He also doesn't Hugo, Elijah or Issac. In fact he doesn't seem to like anything I suggest! I'm suprised we managed to name DS.

Used to love the judy Blume books! Always remember our very 'Godly' English teacher/librarian being puzzled as to why so many pupils were requesting 'Forever' from the school library. Needless to say, once she discovered the reason it was promptly taken off the shelf! Iremember my friend and I standing in WH Smiths flicking through a copy - my friend new the exact pages to look at!

Thanks for all the comments!

FoundWanting "It is an old man's name here in Norfolk and goes with roll-ups and trousers held up with baling twine." - oh dear!

It's interesting to see other people's honest reactions to a name! I've never read that Judy Blume book or ever heard anyone use Ralph to mean vomit, so it doesn't have any of those negative connotations for me.

bundlebelly · 04/11/2010 14:44

Yes, Ralph will always be the Judy Blume penis to me as well. Sorry.

bogie · 04/11/2010 14:47

I like it but I did have a dog called Ralph :o

Komondor · 04/11/2010 14:48

Dont like the name Ralph, but love the name Raef.

missmiss · 04/11/2010 15:00

I like Ralph pronounced Rafe. My mother wanted to name my brother Ralph but my father vetoed it I think she's still slightly sorry!

Corvidae · 04/11/2010 15:13

Ralph = Penis to me too, sorry.

lilly13 · 04/11/2010 15:21

I like Raphael. I assume Ralph is a diminitive form of this name... Ralph sounds a bit harsh, however, Ralphie as a baby name sounds very nice.

tammytoby · 04/11/2010 15:40

I'm surprised at people's association with penis...Hmm but then I've not read this book either.

What about Willy (William) - I thought that was slang for penis? Blush

TheLastMelon · 04/11/2010 16:03

Its only associated with penis because that is what the character chose to name his appendum.
I actually wish i hadnt read that bloody book, its forever tainted in my mind!

YouNeverCanTell · 04/11/2010 16:08

I think your son might get tired of correcting pronounciation as there's probably a fairly even split of Ralf and Rafe versions (thanks to Mr Fiennes?) But I like the name either way!

paddypoopants · 04/11/2010 16:19

Only if your surname is Malph. ( I watched a lot of Happy Days growing up).

Rhubarbgarden · 04/11/2010 18:49

Yep, Judy Blume. Ralph will always make me smirk.

emsyj · 04/11/2010 21:56

I know a little boy called Ralph and he is really gorgeous, so it only has good associations for me.

But then my DD is called Ruth and I think that has vomit overtones too.... Confused

smother · 04/11/2010 22:01

Sorry, I read the book at a formative period in my life so... for me, Ralph = penis!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 05/11/2010 19:55

not a judy blumer but I am Welsh, who are the only people who seem to still pronounce it Rafe...love it but would probably bend to English half of me and spell it Rafe to avoid DS always being called Ralf

Justtrying · 06/11/2010 11:19

Another Judy Blume fan here too, DH has just walked in as i'm reading this thread and asked what i'm smirking about. Forever definately a formative book from my youth, I was able to borrow it from the library as my mum let me have adult tickets at an early age, was allowed to read anything but banned watching from Grange Hill and Eastenders even though i was in senior school.

dementedma · 06/11/2010 20:40

never heard of the book in question. my 16 year old nephew is Ralph and couldn't imagine him being called anythign else. its a very cool name but "Rafe" sounds poncy

onimolap · 06/11/2010 20:52

It's not a variant of Raphael, it came from the old German Radulf, which also spawned Raul/Raoul.

I like it, but only with the traditional Rafe pronunciation.

saffy85 · 07/11/2010 21:45

Reddaisy you beat me to it! Sorry OP the name makes me think of penises.

Off subject, I loved that book.....

MogTheForgetfulCat · 07/11/2010 21:49

Oooh, I love it - Father Ralph de Bricassart in The Thorn Birds! I read it when I was an impressionable adolescent and thought he was swoonsome Grin. He is "Ralf" rather than "Rafe", although I like both.
