...calling your child "Isla" please spell it properly!! It's "Islay", and it is a beautiful Scottish Island on the west coast.

Am I missing something? A) what's with the name boom? B) why isn't it being spelt properly??

It's bugging me, it really is!

I used to work with a man called ILAY which was pronouned like Isla, and he said it was the male version.

Why does it bug you? My name is transliterated (if that's a word) from the cyrillic, so probably not spelled "properly" either.

blame Isla St Clair for popularising the mis-spelling

PaisleyLeaf · 02/11/2010 22:47

Isla St Claire spelt it Isla.

x posts :)

Mitchymum · 02/11/2010 22:57

You can spell it either way, I think.

Islay is the island.

I am Scottish and I think Isla is the more normal spelling for the name.

Highlandgirl · 02/11/2010 23:03

Tarlia I see your point with regards to the scottish isle and it's spelling Islay, The 'y' generally refers to the Isle / Island.

The spelling Isla comes from The River Isla and a Glen Isla. Don't really see why this would bug you...as it is the correct spelling!! Wink

readywithwellies · 02/11/2010 23:20

Australian actress Isla Fisher too (closet home and away fan)
I would spell it Isla.

anonymosity · 02/11/2010 23:23

Its not WRONG its just different. I don't think there are hard and fast rules to the spelling of names, I've seen some real hum-dingers:

Sheree
D'Ana
Kaytee

endless...

christabell · 03/11/2010 06:35

Islay is anglicised.

The actual Gaelic spelling is Ila or Ile

Sarsaparilllla · 03/11/2010 11:27

I don't think there's a 'wrong' spelling.

As a child I was once told off my a teacher who told me I'd spelled my name 'wrong' just because it's spelled differently to the commonly known spelling.

edeluna · 04/11/2010 13:57

I would have guessed it was pronounced [eeslah], as in the Spanish word for 'island'.

WanderingSheep · 04/11/2010 14:01

But Isla looks so much nicer though! Smile

bigbluebump · 04/11/2010 14:14

Yes, if it after the Spanish for island, it's got to be EE-sla.

enaj1308 · 18/08/2012 16:24

Isla is the female name, Islay is the male name, the gaelic for the island is Ile, not even Islay, there's Perthshire Glen and River Isla...not really sure what your problem is with the spelling of Isla?! Sorry to bump this but searching for names and this annoyed me. hormones!

IawnCont · 18/08/2012 17:45

Well, by OP's rules Islay is also incorrect. I thought it was from the Spanish.
