What do you think of Winifred as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

It's a bit old-fashioned. There are names that are old-fashioned in a good way.... but this isn't one of those, I don't think.

Sorry.

evamummy · 02/11/2010 22:13

It is a boys' name to my ears, I'm afraid.

evamummy · 02/11/2010 22:14

Or maybe it's Winfred that is the boys name. Either way, I find it very masculine sounding.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 02/11/2010 22:16

It was the name of the evil, evil, wicked, despicable witch of a headmistress that I had when I started primary school, and for that reason I shall give it a big thumbs down as I try not to shudder at the memories it evokes.

(Even if it weren't I still wouldn't have to say "non"!)

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 02/11/2010 22:17

would have to

JimmyTarbuck · 02/11/2010 22:20

Was my gran's name, so love it. She was known as Winnie and was married to Willie - surname began with a W too. I am not sure I would call a baby Winifred today. It hasn't aged as well as other names IMO.

piscesmoon · 02/11/2010 22:24

Hate it-an old ladies name.

nigglewiggle · 02/11/2010 22:26

DD is at school with a lovely Winnie. I like it.

serin · 02/11/2010 23:01

Like Winnie, but think that Winifred is harsh, a bit like Olga or Gertrude.

ZZZenAgain · 02/11/2010 23:04

usedto be friends with a German woman called Waldtraud. Name didn't suit her in the least and for me Winnifred is a similar type of name. I couldn't carry it off and I don't think it would suit my dd tbh

ZZZenAgain · 02/11/2010 23:05

bah
should be Waltraud not Waldtraud

still don't like it

SecretNutellaFix · 02/11/2010 23:06

I do quite like it, especially with Fred/a as a nn

edam · 02/11/2010 23:11

Odd how some old lady names are v. fashionable and others still smack of Yardley perfumes and Austen Allegros.

FWIW my Godmother is a Winifred and has always disliked her name. Hated being called 'Winnie' as a child.

Three of my Great Aunts had names that are now in the top 20. The one that hasn't come back was Hilda. She was fab and if I had a dd I'd be tempted to use it at least as a middle but again, Aunt Hilda hated her name and actually changed it when she went into a nursing home - grabbed the chance to tell everyone her name was actually Penny. Grin

Hedwig3 · 03/11/2010 13:52

LOVE IT Grin

So many fab nicknames too!

twinsister · 03/11/2010 14:00

I'm with you SecretNutellaFix, I love it...especially Fred and Freda nn. Not as keen on Winnie. Makes me think of Winnie Mandela

Merle · 03/11/2010 14:00

I like it a lot. Ignore the detractors. A few years ago a lot of people would have been negative about names such as George, Oliver etc. (old-fashioned, old-man names etc)

marriednotdead · 03/11/2010 14:10

Know two, both the other side of 60.

Agree, not a name that has aged well. I shall detract.

KenDoddsDadsDogHatesFireworks · 03/11/2010 19:58

One of my parents neighbours is called Winifred. She is a very twinkly lady who loves animals, kids and is very witty. So the name Winnie/Winifred makes me think of nice things.

theagedparent · 03/11/2010 20:08

I love it x

imahappycamper · 03/11/2010 20:08
