Hi all, what's your view on the name Frederick and it's nicknames? That's it! Thanks!

Love it. Love the fact it has so many possibilities for change throughout life and it works in most major European languages which is a bonus.

Freddie is cute for a little boy
Fred or Rick for a teen
Frederick can be carried off by anyone from their early twenties to a pensioner

You should use, if only because I can't, along with Xavier with is another of my face names.

Yummygummybear · 31/10/2010 09:46

I think Freddie is quite popular at the moment. I know of 3 aged between 2 & 6

WillYouDoTheDamnFanjo · 31/10/2010 09:48

Lovely!

HelenaRose · 31/10/2010 14:06

Frederick is a lovely name. It was my Grandfather's name and I'd love to use it as a middle name.

BelligerentGhoul · 31/10/2010 14:11

I like it and don't mind Fred but hate Freddie and Rick.

Ineedsomesleep · 31/10/2010 14:15

Love Frederick. It was my GP's name and he was always known as Fred. Don't like Freddie much though and every time I hear Rick I can hear Bianca shouting "Rickeeeee".

Would have used it for DS but it really doesn't go with our last name.

bundlebelly · 31/10/2010 14:18

Like Frederick. Sort of timeless handsome prince territory, BUT. . .
Fred - West
Freddy - watch psychoville halloween tonight at 10.00!
sorry!

bunnymother · 31/10/2010 14:23

I love it. Know a Freddie who is lovely and funny and clever - so only good association for me. Think it's a popular "posh" name, isn't it? Example - younger brother in Room w A View, plus the Freddie I know, both have similar backgrounds and accents. Am Australian so not really in the know re that sort of thing.

MerryMarigold · 31/10/2010 14:25

I like it a lot in full. NN's are harder. I'd go for Fred as a nickname...though in our family he'd inevitable end up Freddie! In my sister's house, he'd be Frederick, so it all depends on you!

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 31/10/2010 14:32

It's a family name for me. We've had a Frederick and a Josiah in every generation since the late 17th century. I don't like Freddie though and it's fairly popular atm.

ChippyMinton · 31/10/2010 14:35

Not keen. Somehow it doesn't roll off the tongue easily.

BelligerentGhoul · 31/10/2010 14:42

It always makes me think of the lovely, lovely Frederick in Pullman's Sally Lockhart books - sob. :(

franke · 31/10/2010 14:49

I like it and all its shortenings. Classic, classy name imo. There are various different spellings that work too - doesn't have to be Frederick necessarily.

pintyblud · 31/10/2010 14:59

Not keen.

takethatlady · 01/11/2010 13:24

Love it - we're thinking of using it for DC1 if it turns out to be a boy. (It's still a bean).

Fred for nn. Freddie isn't all that common - on the 2009 list it's 53rd and Frederick itself is somewhere in the 90s.

Sarsaparilllla · 01/11/2010 13:28

I like it and I like the fact it can be shortened in loads of different ways

pickledbabe · 01/11/2010 13:30

I love it.
and I love all the nicknames (or rather, the choice you have with nicknames!) that go with it.

Good nicknames no matter how old they are, like frakk said.

But I love it most in its full form.

loler · 01/11/2010 13:33

I Think of frightfully posh boys. Don't mind Fred (although it's a bit old man like).

I find it quite difficult to say - think it's the 'er' in the middle.

Hedwig3 · 02/11/2010 11:04

I like Frederick and Fred.

There is a Frederick (nn Fred/Freddie) and 2 Freddies in my son's year at school.

LetThereBeRock · 02/11/2010 11:50

I hate it.

LaRagazzaInglese · 02/11/2010 12:15

Very cute! like the story book with the mouse :)

thefurryone · 03/11/2010 00:15

I really like it, it's on my list for boys.

emmyloo2 · 03/11/2010 14:48

I like it, with Freddy as a nickname. But I like old fashioned boy's names.

girlafraid · 03/11/2010 15:51

Love it love it love it! Brilliant name, really like full names rather than using nick names as given names
