I'm very suprised not to see Edward on the list!
I come aacross Edwards all over the place... maaybe because they are Eddy/Eddie/Ed/Teddy etc?

hornedtoadjennyp · 29/10/2010 18:50

Well, at least they do report international news and they're not anti-British, particularly. They have also been reporting William and Kate's impending engagement this week! [hconfused] (Sorry to sidetrack the thread)

My ds is an Edward and at 3 resolutely does not want to be called anything else! [hsmile]

valiumskeleton · 29/10/2010 18:53

Are William and Kate getting engaged? Why do they expect that?

jellybeans · 29/10/2010 18:55

I also know of several Mohammeds who go by their middle names day to day but were registered as Mohammed.

I enjoyed reading the combined spellings list, thankyou for posting.

I also know several Aimees and all are said 'Amy' as usual.

hornedtoadjennyp · 29/10/2010 20:06

I've no idea valium but it's all over the news. [hconfused]

CoteDAzur · 29/10/2010 20:23

valium - I don't know how OP arrived at Muhammad as no:1 name, but I read just the other day that this name, together with all its reincarnations, was no:7.

onimolap · 29/10/2010 20:25

I've just been a bit geeky: according to National Statistics online and there were 706,248 live births in UK in 2000.

This means that 1.06 % of (all) babies were called Mohammed, and 0.8% Isabel. Presumably you can roughly double the %ages for proportion of boys and proportion of girls.

CoteDAzur · 29/10/2010 20:27

noeyedear -Turkish form of Muhammed would be "Mehmet" which is quite a rare name these days. We do call the Prophet "Muhammed" but I don't remember ever meating a "Muhammed". It would be a very pretentious name, and rather odd. Like meeting a Christian English boy named "Jesus" (I'm aware that it is a name in some other cultures).

pickler · 29/10/2010 20:27

Cote. Take a look at the stats. Add all the Mohammeds together and you will come to the same number. I think whoever said it was number 7 only calculated the Mohammeds in the top 100.

Oh, to have that kind of time [hgrin]

I sorted the whole girl's name list alphabetically and went through it adding up names that looked like they should sound the same. It's not a scientific approach, just for personal interest and there will definitely be points on which people disagree.

Obviously sometimes you get even the same spelling of a name being pronounced in different ways, which is just one of the reasons why I think the only way that the ONS can legitimately report these stats is to group only the names that are spelt identically.

Btw I make no apologies for having plenty of time on my hands since I am on maternity leave with as yet no baby to look after and have just moved to a different country where I don't speak the language or know anyone except DH who is out at work all day!

runningrach · 29/10/2010 20:50

Btw Lily was the most popular hyphenated name with 1338.

The thing with a lot of shorter names like Evie is that there are potentially quite a few longer versions of it, however good point maryz that even if you add up the longer names there are clearly far fewer than the diminution:

EVIE 3416
EVA 1534
EVELYN 795
EVE 638
EVIE-something 206
EVANGELINE 151
EVA-something 34
EVELINA 33
EVANGELINA 12
EVANA 9
EVIN 7
EVITA 6
EVALINE 3
EVANIA 3
EVELYN-ROSE 3

I've only looked at the girls (as am expecting a DD), there were 5201 Olivia's with that spelling and I threw in others like Oliwia (240) and Olivija (presume eastern european?) and Olivea, but not Olive (97).

Versions of Isabelle:
ISABELLA 2880
ISABELLE 5165
IZZY 112
IZZA 19
ISABELLA-something 15
ISABELLE-ROSE 8

These include anything that sounds like the above but not names like Isadora or Ishbel. I just add up all the names that look like they sound the same and put the total next to the most popular version before deleting all the other rows from my spreadsheet.

The original spreadsheet (girls) is here: www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_population/2009-girls.xls

pickler · 29/10/2010 21:32

Don't forget Isobel and Isobelle!

OP posts:
pickler · 29/10/2010 21:33

Oh are those included in the Isabelles?

OP posts:
runningrach · 29/10/2010 21:35

picker those are aggregated under Isabelle, sorry I didn't explain it very well - the list above is different sounding variants on Isabelle for maryz.

runningrach · 29/10/2010 21:36

x post! yes! Smile

Jayden, Jaiden, Jaden, Jadon, Jaydon, Jaidon, Jaydn etc etc..

I've only ever met 2 - one spelt Jayden and one Jaiden.

OP posts:
hornedtoadjennyp · 29/10/2010 21:53

Jaden, Jaydon all common over here, for girls as well.

hornedtoadjennyp · 29/10/2010 21:54

x-post with pickler.
