Josephine (nn Posy)

I love Posy as a nickname for Josephine, in fact I'd be inclined to use it all the time, i.e. the child would use it at school, sign it as her name, and Josephine really only be used on the birth certificate.

Is it worth having Josephine as a name to fall back on? I'm thinking that would be the case, as, for instance, I love the inspirational figure Josephine Baker. Or does Posy stand alone. Would you put just Posy on the birth certificate?

Oh, and what would go well as a middle name?

I love this name - beautiful. The nickname is sweet too.

Middle name though - have no idea.

nooka · 28/10/2010 07:14

I'd not go for Posy alone, but I don't like nns for formal use, and I like names with lots of choice. I've always personally liked having a name for family/close friends and a name for school/work.

Middle names depend on your surname I think, as it's the flow of the whole name that matters to me.

I had a post just like this (before we knew we were having a boy) but (and I mentioned it in your other post) we couldn't have Josephine as we have a DS named Joseph.

I was trying to find something else that it could be a diminutive of.

Personally, though we loved the name, we felt that a 'grown up' name to fall back on would be good (though there are grown up women called Posy (Posy Simmonds for example). It may be that she'll never be known as anything else, but a formal name is there if needed.

Besides, Josephine is a lovely name, too.

ragged · 28/10/2010 09:42

Posy sounds like Poser. I'd think twice about it.

RockBat · 28/10/2010 09:44

Josephine is lovely, Posy is hideous. Sorry!

JosephineClaire · 28/10/2010 09:49

Fab name, but I might be biased Wink

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 28/10/2010 10:24

It's not hideous at all!! If you love it, use it, it's your baby (read 'The Ballet Shoes' MissHavishamsDress, if you haven't already).

Actually, probably the same people told me it was hideous when I posted, too - and, I believe, told me I should stick to naming cats, but there you go. We can't all like the same names, can we?

candlebra · 28/10/2010 10:35

not my choice but your inital post was a good idea.
register her as josephine and call her posy,
her choice
is posy short of josephine.

or alternatively how about posy josephine and she can take on second name? in retrospect, having typed that out, i think your idea is better.

Faaamily · 28/10/2010 10:37

Sorry, Posy is revolting. It's just so silly and twee.

Josephine is lovely.

Guacamole · 28/10/2010 10:42

"I love Posy as a nickname for Josephine, in fact I'd be inclined to use it all the time, i.e. the child would use it at school, sign it as her name, and Josephine really only be used on the birth certificate. "

Uuuummm I think that's up to your daughter, if I'm honest I can't imagine any teenager wanting to be called Posy and imagine (whether you like it or not) it won't be long before people are calling her Jo.

lucykate · 28/10/2010 10:46

there is a girl at dd's school whose name is josephine but she's always known as posy (think they spell it posie)

cumbria81 · 28/10/2010 11:02

They are both awful. Sorry.

thefurryone · 28/10/2010 11:04

I reckon go for Josephine I like the idea of giving a child options rather than saddling it with a nickname that they may or may not wish to use as they get older. Probably because I have a name that you can't turn into a nickname!

Loads of choice with Josephine, Jo, Josie, Jose, Phine, Joey, Seph.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 28/10/2010 11:14

I'd love to know what your children are called cumbria81 - everytime I've ever seen you post you've absolutely slated every name (including my DD1's name). We obviously have completely opposing taste :)

But isn't that why OP wants to have Josephine on the birth certificate, Guacamole, so that her DD can choose at some point in the future? To an extent, we all get to choose what our children are known as up to a point - but I fully appreciate when my DDs grow up or get to a certain age they may well decide they prefer to be known as something else. It wouldn't stop us calling them what we've always called them, though.

MissHavishamsDress · 28/10/2010 12:56

Guacamole, did your children choose their own names? Of course the name we give them is the one they use, until they are old enough (probably as teenagers) to decide.

Good point, my DS is 6 months so no... What I mean is we call him by his full first name, but I imagine at school someone will shorten it, create a nickname somewhere along the line.
But I see what you mean, I didn't read your post very well. You are giving her the name Josephine on her birth certificate, but will always call her Posy and therefore will never be referred to as Josephine... And Posy isn't really shorten-able is it?

Potentially it's prone to some not so nice nicknames... Poser, Posy Parker...

I might be biased - Josephine is lovely. As a very young child I couldn't say it though and pronounced it Dodie, which became my nickname from my parents (my dad still uses it from time to time). As I grew older I insisted that people use my full name, I hated people shortening it. Now I'm usually jo unless it's my relatives talking to me. (Or my mum telling me off Grin
Personally not that fond of Posy.
I think a one or two syllable name works for a middle name, mine's two syllables.
