We have a truly adorable little baby boy named Archie. I love him and, popular or not, I love his name. Recently though my DH and I questioned whether we should have given him a more longform name on his birth certificate (Archibald or Archer are the only two we can think of).

So my question is, if you have an Archie or are considering using the name what would you or did you put on the birth certificate. Day to day we will be using Archie but does a longer formal name give him more future name options? Or given we are unlikely to use it regularly, does it confuse things? He is only a few months so we have time to change the birth certificate if we wish but just can't decide.

Oh, and I know you don't have to like Archie to help me but I just didn't want anyone thinking I was asking for opinions on the name itself. It's his name and I adore him so negative Archie remarks would be most upsetting!

My friend has an Archer, whom they call Archie. I love Archer, prefer it to Archie, not keen on Archibald at all. A lot of people use Archie on its own, but I would prefer to have another option.

Archie is a very cute name for a baby. Archibald (spelling?) sounds very rough to my ears. Sorry!

Archie is a great name. I think it will be fine for a grown up too. In fact I know a few. Archibald is horrid but, imo, the only long form you should consider. Personally I would just stick with Archie.

Thanks all - we have made a decision finally and Archie it will stay on the birth certificate.

Fel1x, you made a great point. I do agree that our perception of names today is totally different to the way they will be seen once our little ones are fully grown. I know some adult Archies and I've never wondered whether they are Archibald on formal correspondence, and I think 20 years from now very few of them ever will be and the absence of a longform version won't hold him back in the slightest. I know some might disagree, but the consensus here seems to be stick with Archie and as it's a name we love that suits him to a tee we're willing to take our chances. Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice. Best of luck with your own naming dilemmas x
