Can I be the first Scot to say that it means penis in Scotland so don't use it if there is a chance of you moving north of the border.

Toby Carvery is a place that amuses the scots no end.

ChasingSquirrels · 25/10/2010 22:13

I have one, but I was never completely sure about it. Mainly as I agree it isn't a "man's" name. Am sure it will be when he is!

LexieB · 25/10/2010 22:13

Oh no! Did not know this information!

ivykaty44 · 25/10/2010 22:14

dd1 who is 18 had a bf who was really very cool and handsome named toby - he borke her heart Sad

zenon · 26/10/2010 20:05

No please not Toby.Wink

There are hundreds of gorgeous names for boys.

It really is a name for a penis or a jug in ScotlandGrin

NotAnotherNewNappy · 26/10/2010 20:15

I really love - have been trying to persuade DH towards Tobias. The only toby I've ever known sounds a bit like ivykaty44 daughter's ex boyf - total heartbreaker.

Am gutted to learn it means penis in Scotland.

christabell · 26/10/2010 20:18

I am Scottish (east coast) and have never heard Toby used as slang for penis (though do associate it with jugs which is not quite as bad). Am bit worried as this is name my friend who is in Scotland is thinking of - has anyone else heard this? Is it a particular part of Scotland? Personally, I like it.

GingerCursedEeeee · 26/10/2010 20:19

I know a gorgeous Toby and think it is a lovely name

NeverGhoul · 26/10/2010 20:20

also scottish here, never heard of it as slang. i love toby Wink

pintyblud · 26/10/2010 20:28

I have never heard a scot talk about his toby. Is it rhyming slang?

I don't like th e name though. It's a bit wussy

mamadiva · 26/10/2010 20:33

Erm I am also Scottish and I think the term is Boabby (sp?), well that's the only one I can think of which is relatively similar...

The only Toby's I know are dogs but it is a nice name Wink

avaj · 26/10/2010 21:53

I'm from Scotland too, and a couple of female friends use it as a word for their 'ladies bottom', never heard it used as slang for penis though! All the same, couldn't ever take it seriously.

Rhubarbgarden · 26/10/2010 21:57

I know a baby Toby - he lives in Edinburgh.

spidookly · 26/10/2010 21:59

I love the name Toby, and have no issues with it as a name for a man.

I did not know about the Scottish thing.

I feel like the new "that's a dog's name" is someone popping up to say "that's what Scottish people call their knobs"

Red13 · 26/10/2010 22:10

I'm also from Scotland (Perthshire) and, alas, it was a slang term for penis in my home town.

On a similar tangent, there aren't too many Jakes born in Scotland either...

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 26/10/2010 23:21

I am from Dundee and there is a whole rhyme involving toby.

eech mich hens keich toby bum fart

And the Toby Carvery is in Perth. Maybe a regional thing.

nooka · 27/10/2010 06:14

To me Toby is a dogs name as we had one when I was growing up, and met many others. I quite like Tobias and like Tobit even more.

Hedwig3 · 27/10/2010 12:57

Lovely

pintyblud · 27/10/2010 18:56

oh yeah, there will be loads of tobys in edinburgh

Haliborange · 27/10/2010 19:00

I shared a student house with a chap called Toby. We used to watch Animal Hospital and roar with laughter at how every small dog was named Toby (or Molly).

Anyhoo, I still think it is a nice name.

pintyblud · 27/10/2010 20:39

You knew how to live it up Wink

Haliborange · 27/10/2010 21:08

Grin And still do...
