A few months to go still but what do you reckon to these girls names?

Ottilie (recently grown on me)
Josephine (also happened to see this on another thread)
Daphne
Jacinthe (French for Hyacinth or Bluebell)
Jacinth (without the 'e' means the fiery orange stone)

a sister for Violet

I do like a botanical theme but not the obvious Lily etc

Other suggestions welcome

I think Josephine is due a comeback :)

BUT

I think Daphne worke better with Violet

Really dislike Jacinthe and Jacinth

Like Ottilie but to many L's and T's with Violet

mathanxiety · 25/10/2010 18:23

I love Josephine (one nn for which is Posy), Daphne and Jacinthe.

Violet and Ottilie have similar sounds minus the V. Jacinth seems a bit cut off at the knee, to me.

I also love Sylvia, Cynthia, Aster, Aven and Arden.

scaleymcnamechange · 25/10/2010 18:26

Oh please choose Zinnia Smile.

theagedparent · 25/10/2010 18:35

Ottilie is beautiful

MissHavishamsDress · 25/10/2010 18:36

Oh yes, math, Posy makes for a very sweet nickname. Agree a little about the anagram effect of Violet and Ottilie, hadn't thought of that, perhaps that was the attraction

Do like Zinnia scaley, would suit a fiesty character, Zinnias are rather blowsy, no?

Jonquil would be lovely.

Iris?
Lilian?

I rather like Daphne, if I can ignore the Neighbours memories.

Ottilie and Jacinthe are a bit trying too hard to my ears. (And Jacinthe could be nn'd "Jackie" which I'm not a fan of).

MissHavishamsDress · 25/10/2010 18:49

Thanks minipie

I also love Iris, just know of others in my area,

Jacinthe has a soft sound Ja - sinthe

so would probably be shortened to Jas or Jaz, which I quite like

Ottilie - don't like, not a nice sound
Josephine - it's ok, I find it a bit long and prim for my taste
Daphne - long-necked and over serious
Jacinthe - pronounced in a french way? How do you pronounce this name?
Jacinth - dont like at all

I'd go for Jesphine (Josie)

pintyblud · 25/10/2010 18:58

that shoud be josephine

pintyblud · 25/10/2010 18:58

I much prefer Jasmine

washngo · 25/10/2010 19:05

I like daphne. At school my drama teacher called me daphne, refused to call me my real name. Even talked to my parents at parents eve referring to me as daphne the whole way through. He said it's because I look like I stepped out of the 1920s which I always chose to take as a compliment! Anyway, goes really nicely with violet and is unusual too.

Faaamily · 25/10/2010 19:09

I love Ottilie and Josephine

I' afraid I cannot bear Daphne. It has connotations of the Mitford sisters for me, for some reason.

Jacinthe / Jacinth not nice imo.

telsa · 25/10/2010 19:40

I love Ottilie - but what about
Petula
Aster
Cloris
Jolan
Camille
Juscinta

MissHavishamsDress · 26/10/2010 08:21

minipie, I've grown to love Jonquil!

I read jacinthe as jac in the...

I think josephine goes really well with violet.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/10/2010 09:08

I like Josephine - like mathanxiety says, the nn Posy is lovely.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/10/2010 09:10

Other flower names that I think are lovely are:

Jessamine (old form of Jasmine)
Ianthe - but then, that means Violet, so that's probably a no from you.

MissHavishamsDress · 27/10/2010 10:22

Jessamine is lovely, I actually had a friend/ colleague by this name, known as Jess, bit to similar to Jessica.

I'm actually getting really into Josephine with Posy as the nn. I know that I would end up much preferring Posy and wanting others to call her that, e.g. at school etc. rather than Josephine. Wouldn't that get annoying?

OP posts:
thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/10/2010 10:52

Please, please please call her Posy as I'm not going to get the chance! We're having another boy but even if we weren't the boy we have is called Joseph!! So I will never get to use it.

I know that on nursery forms you get a section where it says something like 'Child's name:....' and then 'Name child is to be known by:......' So I'm sure if she was always known as Posy, it would stick.
