Sounds made up?

We have been agonising over a name for baby number 2 for ages. Me and DH just haven't been able to agree.

Then he came across Elodie and I loved it. Thought we were totally agreed.

Mentioned it to my friend who snorted and said it sounded made up Shock

I said it's French, and she said "You're not so why use a French name?"

I know it shouldn't matter, but it has rocked my confidence a bit. I don't want to be met with snorts when unveiling new dd Grin

Any thoughts?

It sounds about as made up as John.
Of course it was made up. Once upon a time. All names were but it's not Jadia fgs.

It's very pretty indeed. Elodie that is. Not Jadia. I made that up.

MoppingMummy · 25/10/2010 17:08

Elodie's a lovely name!

Yellowflowers · 25/10/2010 17:10

some friend!

emmyloo2 · 25/10/2010 17:10

Elodie is certainly not made up. It is French, yes, but not overtly French I don't think. Bit like Eloise or Chloe. I don't think it is so French that you have to be French to use it.

It's lovely by the way.

And why-or-why do people criticise name choices when you tell them? I just don't understand.....fair enough if you are asking for advice on a forum such as this, but a friend in real life?

CharlotteLER · 25/10/2010 17:12

Elodie isn't made up your friends being silly.
I decided to keep the name to myself for that reason!

mapoftheworld · 25/10/2010 17:14

I've heard of it so it must be fairly well heard of
Its lovely

FernieB · 25/10/2010 17:18

Very pretty name - why would you need to be French to use a French name? Both my kids have Scandinavian names but we are both British.

I did not tell anyone (including family) about our name choice before they kids arrived as I knew there would be some comments. Once the kids are there, no-one says anything.

BertieBasset · 25/10/2010 18:12

Thanks everyone - my confidence is restored!

Those who have suggested keeping the name to ourselves are completely right, I'll take your advice.

It's a lovely name. Does it matter where it comes from? I have Nigerian friends who gave their kids "Western" names, and a South African friend who gave her son a French name. Doesn't matter.

mazzystartled · 25/10/2010 18:25

It's beautiful, and your friend is being somewhat pedantic.

Galena · 25/10/2010 18:26

It's a pretty name, but having never heard it a year ago, suddenly I knew 2! Not sure if it's a sign of the times...

Eglu · 25/10/2010 18:28

Elodie is a lovely name, and your friend has obviously led a very sheltered life never to have heard of it.

MissHavishamsDress · 25/10/2010 18:33

Very pretty name, agree with Eglu

Frrrrightattendant · 25/10/2010 18:33

I actually prefer Jadia. hmmm.

But no, it doesn't sound made up and you need to have a word with your friend.

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 25/10/2010 19:34

Elodie is gorgeous. Your friend is probably jealous.

BertieBasset · 25/10/2010 20:29

Elodie it is! Now just need to find a middle name to go with it...

Galena · 25/10/2010 20:33

Jane. I dunno, Elodie Jane just has a nice ring to it.

BertieBasset · 25/10/2010 20:36

I agree, but I already have Jane as DD1's middle name

nigglewiggle · 25/10/2010 20:43

Elodie Jadia!

expectingno3 · 25/10/2010 22:06

Elodie Grace
Elodie Rose

flopsy1974 · 25/10/2010 22:25

Lovely name. If you love it go for it.

AuraofDora · 25/10/2010 23:04

Elodie Anna

Elodie Meadow

Oldjolyon · 25/10/2010 23:33

Ignore them... People have some very odd ideas when it comes to names.

My DD is Eloise, and I was told by one friend that she wasn't that keen as she 'didn't like these modern names'. Hmm, never heard of Heloise and Abelard then? Or the fact that Shakespeare wrote the play Elois and Abelard (but never published).

I've also been told its odd having a French name when we're not French. Although it seems having a Welsh / Irish name when you're not Welsh or Irish is perfectly fine.

People have some very funny ideas... Best to ignore!

lowrib · 26/10/2010 00:48

I love Elodie. It was my top name for a girl (we had a boy).

I don't think that it matters that it's French at all, why would it?

It's a very pretty sounding name, unusual, but easy to say and spell, and becoming more common I believe.

BertieBasset · 26/10/2010 18:05

Fab, thanks for all the comments and the suggestions on a middle name. I feel much happier now!
