I've always liked the name holly and thought it was quite unusual, but not too weird. now I've been told its really popular so I'm a bit worried about it. what do people think? the only other one we can think of is heidi....

I only know one little Holly, I don't think it's very popular (not around here anyway). I really hate the description of names as "chav", but in any event I can't really see how Holly would ever be described by anyone as that. I think it's a lovely name.

BridesheadRegardless · 22/10/2010 12:33

Neither.

Perfectly nice and acceptable.

phipps · 22/10/2010 12:34

Not too popular and definitely not chavvy Hmm.

ValiumSkeleton · 22/10/2010 12:35

No it's not. There are names I have described in that way in the past and been abused for my honesty! but this is a proper name, not invented, not spelled creatively, not from an American soap... don't know what you're worried about.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 22/10/2010 12:39

It's sort of middling popular isn't it ie you do meet others but not all the time. It's not overused, is a normal non-offensive name.

But I don't particularly like it but that's just personal preference. I don't like girly names with that sound at the end (Tilly, Millie, Holly, Ellie etc) I know/have known 3 Hollys. All of them had sisters called Poppy.

Actually, that might be why you're thinking it's popular/"chav". It's the sound. All little girls are called Ellie/Millie/Tilly atm. It's a common sound. It's cutesy and perhaps sounds abbreviated when really it's just being tainted by association.

nickytwotimes · 22/10/2010 12:39

not chavvy at all! good god.

lovely name.

Yummygummybear · 22/10/2010 12:41

I have never met a Holly before.

Pretty name

hm33 · 22/10/2010 12:41

phew I feel really reassured already, thanks!

its only chavvy if you spell it Holli Grin

christabell · 22/10/2010 12:55

According to the statistics from 2008 for England and Wales (most recent available) Holly was at number 22 for popularity - so quite popular, although I only know of one.

Personally I think it is a bit of a little girly name (though not especially chavvy) - can't really imagine a middle aged or old woman called Holly but maybe that is just me.

gibbberish · 22/10/2010 12:57

The only Holly I know is a guinea pig!

But love it. And not chavvy in the slightest.

Also love Heidi btw.

highlystrung · 22/10/2010 13:01

There are three on my road - two offspring of doctors so probably not described as chavs.

LouMacca · 22/10/2010 13:13

Holly is definitely not chavvy!

I know two - one Holly, one Hollie. I would say its pretty and not over-used.

androbbob · 22/10/2010 13:15

Holly Willoughby springs to mind and also Ben and Holly's Magical Kingdom

stressSeveredHeadOnaStickEric · 22/10/2010 13:16

Heidi is great and more unusual than Holly.
I like H names a lot
Hester
Helena

stickylittlefingers · 22/10/2010 13:17

The only Holly I ever knew was a huntin/shootin/fishin type so it makes me think seriousy posh and not chavvy at all.

It's a quite nice name I think, so long as you don't have another DD called Ivy.

juicy12 · 22/10/2010 13:20

Holly - lovely
Hollie - not lovely

HollyFP · 22/10/2010 13:28

No!! I am neither too popular nor chavvy :o

stickylittlefingers · 22/10/2010 13:39

HollyFP [hgrin] must be great to be you!!

peppermum · 22/10/2010 13:47

I work in a school.

In year 1 we have Holly, Molly, Dilly, Millie and Milly! Quite a tongue twister when you are sorting out groups!

And a little sister Nellie (Nelly?)

All good fun! Holly isn't that common - there's usually one in a year group. I like it!

BridesheadRegardless · 22/10/2010 14:02

1 Holly in my DS's school.

She's not chavvy but she is quite popular.

letsblowthistacostand · 22/10/2010 14:02

I think it's a really sweet name. I knew some really lovely Hollys when I was in school.

emptyshell · 22/10/2010 14:31

It's popular but not insanely popular, it's easy to spell, easy to pronounce - it's a decent name (if you like the -y/ie girls names trend).

Have to say the first thing that always jumps into my mind is Holly from Red Dwarf - but is that really a bad thing?! :D
