Anyone in Scotland - popularity and pronounciation of Aaron?

Hi
we are considering the name Aaron if baby is a boy, but looking at name stats it is number 7 in Scotland and much much less popular in England where it is around number 50 - think maybe it has been conflated with Arran, as in the island. We live in England but I am Scottish and we may move back at some point. Just wanted to ask people in Scotland if the name Aaron seems to be everywhere up there and how is it normally pronounced (we would pronounce Air-on, which after extensive google searching I believe is the original, and correct pronounciation).

I am Scottish but don't live there (helpful!) but up there it is said like Arran.

soon2be4 · 20/10/2010 11:42

Most of them are pronounced like Arran up here. Dont think many are Air - on. Lovely name!

SaorAlba · 20/10/2010 11:45

I live in Aberdeenshire. We would say Arran, like the island. The Airon pronunciation seems very posh to me.(not trying to offend, just giving you an honest point of view).

I don't know any kids called Aaron. I'm sure it's not unheard of here, but I wonder if it's less of an east coast thing.

DramaInPyjamas · 20/10/2010 11:48

I ony know of 3 Aarons. One is pronounced 'Arr-an' and the other two are 'Air-on'.
I'm West Scotland - It might vary place to place though.

I'd say air-on too, west of Scotland. Only one I know is one I went to school with! The popularity things are odd, I have a Cameron and he's still the only one we know despite it's popularity!! You need to look at regions, some names are so popular in a certain region of Scotland they skew the results.

cheeseytoastie · 20/10/2010 11:59

look at this, shows you that even if you choose the popular names, you'd need to be unlucky to have another one living next door!!

Good link, cheesey. It appears to be a north/south divide on the popularity rather than an east/west one.

FimboBBINGFORAPPLES · 20/10/2010 13:47

I always think Air on is American, wasn't it Elvis Presley's middle name?

gibbberish · 20/10/2010 13:50

Have heard it pronounced Arran here (Central Scotland).

APixieInMyTea · 20/10/2010 14:48

The original pronounciation (biblical) is Air-ron which is why my ds is called Arran, to avoid confusion because I wasn't to keen on the Air-ron pronounciation.

We live in south of England.... But I have a few family members dotted around Scotland and between them they only know 2 Aaron/Arran's.

fairybubbles · 20/10/2010 19:23

I know of quite a few Aaron's and most are newborns. It's become much more popular here in the last few years.

ladymeg · 20/10/2010 20:01

My son knows 4 (they are all 12) We are in Angus.
2 Aaron (pronounced as in jumper)
1 Airon
1 Arran

Quite popular seems to be a few at the local primary and nursery too.

christabell · 21/10/2010 11:27

Thanks all - interesting to see there is still a bit of a split in pronounciations, so at least some are known as Air-on in Scotland too, and it seems Aarons are generally known by the version they want. Pronounciation as in 'jumper' seems a bit of a strange one though! My partner is fixed on this name, and I also can't really think of any other boys' names I like - just worried I will be constantly having to tell nursery staff/teachers 'no, it's Air-on, and get a reputation for being annoying!'

I know a couple of Aaron's, live north-east england. They are all pronounced arran.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 21/10/2010 12:19

That link is brilliant...thank you.

We live in London and hoping to moved back to Edinburgh at some point, but after seeing Isla so high on the list, might remove it from our short list.

Aaron and pronounce it Arran. xx

emptyshell · 21/10/2010 15:52

I'm not Scottish but it's one I always double check with the kid in question how it's pronounced if I see it when taking the register (because whichever one I guess at I pick the wrong option).
