I was thinking of how some names have 'swaped' gender over time.

A lot of boys-only names of today, phonetically sound like girls' names. will they switch to being girls-only in 100 years?

names i'm thinking of are:

Finlay
Zain
Eddie
Adrian
Flynn
Tristan
Austin
Daniel
Toby
Harry
Shay
Fraser
Dale
Cooper
Riley
Freddie
Ryan
Harvey
Caden
Kieran
Robbie
Jay
Laurence
Christain
Joel
Ollie
Dylan
Sidney
Aidan
Jonny
Noah
Aaron
Caelan
Micky/Mikey
Lennox
Kane
Sean
Alfie
Brody
Jonah
Ashton
Jamie
Sonny

Laurence is already a girls' name - it is the female version of Laurent. Like Florence/Florent.

I also know a female Freddie - short for Frederique.

SparklyJules · 17/10/2010 22:09

I know a little girl called Ollie. Really suits her.

Vine · 17/10/2010 22:14

I think the surname type names like Riley. We already see it with the likes of Morgan, Taylor. I cannot see Samuel or Michael becoming girls names, far too established and masculine.

cece · 17/10/2010 22:17

I think Esme used to be used for boys didn't it?

edam · 17/10/2010 22:20

My name used to be for either gender with a slightly different spelling but the same sound. But you never, ever hear of a boy or man called this name now - definitely only for girls. And almost all women have what used to be the male spelling.

smilingserenely · 17/10/2010 22:22

celestine , celeste , shirley and angel were all male names once.
vine know of 2 little girls called samuel

ValiumSkeleton · 18/10/2010 08:24

Anything ending in ley

Finley
stanley

Esme originated not in France but as a form of Edward! used in Scotland for girls.

I think we're going to end up with no boys names to choose from. It's very difficult to re-establish a name as a boys name once there are lots of girls using it.

DinahRod · 18/10/2010 10:02

Don't think many on the OP's list will become the preserve of the feminine, says she who has a brother with a unisex name.

Those that will are the surnamey type like Riley, Mackenzie.... but not ALfie, Joel, Daniel, Noah, Jonah etc otherwise that just leaves Butch and HeMan for the boys.

mintyfresh · 18/10/2010 10:16

Maybe names will just become more unisex generally! It's already getting to the stage with some names where you can't be sure of the gender Smile
