Peter?

I am expecting my 4th dc. I have 3 boys already. We do not plan to find out the sex of this baby until he/she is born.
Having 3 sons already, we are racking our brains for a name we really like for the baby if it's another boy. My 3dc have quite traditional names, (Henry is the name of one of our children, to give you an idea.)
There are alot of boys on my dh side of the family, who have names I like but can't have as they have the same surname.
Yesterday we were flicking through the name book and my dh announced that he really liked Peter. I can't decide. Help!

Nice but a bit boring. Don't like Pete as nn

BuntyPenfold · 14/10/2010 11:24

I like it, and Pete as well.
Which is lucky, as I had a William who has changed his name to Pete!

WowOoo · 14/10/2010 11:25

Lovely!

comtessa · 14/10/2010 11:25

Lovely. Meaning: Rock.
I would like this if we were having a boy (not least because I have two very good friends called Peter) however our surname is a variation on this so just cannot use it.

nancy10 · 14/10/2010 11:32

He would be Peter James and our surname is similar to Thomson. I like James as a first name too but it's my dh brothers name. Initially I wasn't keen on a nn Pete but that's life and as you've said BuntyPenfold, boys more so then girls do change their names.

I don't really like it - but I do like the idea of that type of name coming back into fashion. What about these as alternatives?

eg

Patrick
Michael
Steven
David

JamieLeeCurtis · 14/10/2010 11:35

and Matthew

nancy10 · 14/10/2010 11:40

Love Matthew! Will write that one down. I qliked Patrick but dh doesn't. Not so keen on Michael, Steven and David.

I have a little 2 year old Peter! I like it because it is a strong sounding, uncommon yet not outlandish name.

He's never Pete though although I understand I may have no choice when he is older.

Worst thing for me was the whole baby P thing in the news when he was small.. I really struggled with that at the time.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 14/10/2010 12:47

I really like Peter, DH has veto it..boo! Don't really like Pete. But every Peter I have met has been lovely.

meadowlarks · 14/10/2010 12:51

I like Peter. It reminds me of Victorian children's books. I like both Pete and Petey as nicknames.

Frrrrightattendant · 14/10/2010 12:59

One advantage is you'll never have to spell it for folk.

I like it.

BridesheadRegardless · 14/10/2010 13:00

I love Peter.

It has a real simplisity.

It's sweet for a little boy (think Peter Rabbit) but not in a cloying way like some childrens names lately.

But strong for a man.

Matthew is good too. how about Daniel?

hildathebuilder · 14/10/2010 13:02

It's my DS middle name. I love it but didn't want DS to have same name as DH's godson. I know quite a few other Peter's and never really understood why it wasn't popular.

Francagoestohollywood · 14/10/2010 13:03

Peter is a lovely name. Not too fashionable, not wet. Lovely!

mumbybumby · 14/10/2010 13:14

I like Peter and all the Peters I've known have been lovely. (sighs wistfully)

chickentwizzler · 14/10/2010 15:27

I like Peter.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/10/2010 15:30

I love Peter- was my father's name and his father's name, plus my sister's dp is Peter as well. All decent blokes.

I've only met 2 Peter's I didn't like, but one was the school bully and I gave back as good as I got, the other was his father.

It's a truly classic name.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/10/2010 15:31

If you are looking for other suggetsions as well, what do you both think of Anthony?

cumbria81 · 14/10/2010 15:54

I have always loved the name Peter.

Sadly it doesn't work in France (where we used to live) as it means "fart"

SpiderWilliam · 14/10/2010 16:14

Cumbria that's funny I didn't know that. I have a 2 yo Peter and my parents have a house in France so I am now imagining what goes through their neighbours' minds when they talk about their precious grandson.

I believe it is slang in the US for penis (like Dick is here).

Regardless of that, we have been really happy with our choice. Smile British people at least seem to be very positive and you get lots of "Ooh you don't hear that v much these days" type comments.

What about Adam?

nancy10 · 14/10/2010 17:12

Thanks everyone. Not keen on Anthony. I like Daniel, but someone in the family fairly recently has named their son Daniel. I really liked Adam third time round but we chose another name in the end, so I'll write that down on my really short list. I'll keep quiet about the French/US slang for Peter.
I think it's growing on me. It's a good name for a little boy and an old man.
