DH LOVES this name, and it goes with our surname (begins with Gr), I think I like it, as long as its not shortened to Steve.

We do seem to like names ending in en.

What do you all think?

Good solid name - like it.

BuntyPenfold · 12/10/2010 17:54

I would say do not choose a name if you dislike the obvious shortening.

chickentwizzler · 12/10/2010 17:58

Hmm, good point Bunty Penfold.

The issue is I used to have an Uncle Steve (now divorced and dont see him, after he cheated on my lovely aunt - mums sister), and I associate it with him.

You have to think about shortened versions. What about other -en names?

Dicken
Roben

strandedatsea · 12/10/2010 18:30

Stefan?

wigglesrock · 12/10/2010 20:38

My husband is called Stephen, never been shortened, his mum never shortened it and none of our friends do.

HRHCavey · 12/10/2010 20:44

I know two Stephen's, both use the full name. One is affectionately known as Stevie from time to time - what do you think of that as a nickname?

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 12/10/2010 21:01

Yes how about Stefan? It's a lovely name.

I don't know any Stephen/Stevens in this country, although one from Italy who uses his full name.

Bloody looooads of Steves though.

If you don't like Steve, I can't see you liking Stephen much either TBH.

What names do YOU like?

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 12/10/2010 21:02

I like it.

pooter · 12/10/2010 21:05

love it - because it is my lovely brother's name. He gets called ste by the family and steve by his mates and when his wife is in a good mood its stevie.

chickentwizzler · 13/10/2010 11:02

I like Stefan, but consider it the German name for Stephen (I went to school with a German boy called Stefan, and he was very unattractive - which sticks in my mind).

Steffan (welsh name for Stephen) has already been used in our family.

I wonder if I call him Stephen all his life, and not Steve, it'll be okay.

I dont like the spelling Steven.

Other names I like are quite traditional - Mark, Richard, William, Edward etc. These have all been used in our family, and we have a rule not to use family or close friends names.

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 13/10/2010 14:20

Really, OP, I don't think spelling it with a ph, and calling him the full name all the time, and going "la la not listening" when other people shorten it, will ever really protect you from the fact that your son will be called Steeeeeve.

Sorry.

I bet there are traditional names that haven't been used.

Patrick
Thomas
Simon
Samuel
David (or Davy)
Matthew
Jonathan

etc.

cumbria81 · 13/10/2010 14:52

I like it.

Good, NORMAL name.

Very refreshing.

belindarose · 13/10/2010 14:54

I love it. My brother's name. Has always been 'Steven' until now (mid 30's) as someone else at work is Steven so he's 'Steve' there apparently.

hatsybatsy · 13/10/2010 16:05

I do know one Stephen who is not Steve but it is unusual for it not to get shortened?

I think if you don't like the short version then don't choose the name? (dh is david - everyone calls him Dave except his parents who hate it...)

ds is Matthew - if he chooses to be Matt when he is older then that is fine by me.

NiceCuppaT · 13/10/2010 16:22

your son may hate Stephen so might decide to call himself Steve, or even worse Ste!!!

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 13/10/2010 16:37

I know a Matthew who is "Thew" - bet his parents didn't see that one coming

chickentwizzler · 13/10/2010 16:55

Patrick - dont like it when shortened to Pat, and the name is too Irish
Thomas - good friends have used this name, still slightly tempted as like the name Tom, but doesnt go as well as Stephen with our surname
Simon - both DH and I have cousins with this name
Samuel - I like the name Samuel but not Sam
David (or Davy) - Dad and ex boyfriend names are David
Matthew - like this name. DH has a good friend called Matt, which is putting him off. I also have an ex-boyfriend called Matt.
Jonathan - dont like this name(unexplainable)

I only have three ex-boyfriends, but I was with all three for over a year, and they have stopped me from using three good solid names - Daniel, Matthew and David (wouldnt have used anyway due to dads name).

Hubbies names Ian and his brothers Andrew, which rules these names out. My brothers are Gareth and Charles/Charlie.

Not easy using traditional names, when hubbie doesnt want names that friends family have already taken!!

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 13/10/2010 17:00

Okay! Hypocritically I'm going to mention that lots of Matthews are always Matthew, not Matt, but it could happen of course. I love Math/Mathy as a shortening.

Arthur
Albert
Ben
George
Henry
Ivan
James
Lucas
Peter ( i hate this, but people do use it! :o)
Robert
Theo

meadowlarks · 13/10/2010 17:03

Stephen Hero. I like it a lot. I know one and he never gets called Steve. I think you can avoid it.

chickentwizzler · 13/10/2010 17:22

Thanks meadowlarks, I do like the name Stephen.

I'm far too fussy, EvilAnts, re your names:

Arthur - dont like old men/ old lady names, and although there are lots of cute young Arthurs to me its an old man name
Albert - another old men names, and think of Albert from Only Fools and Horses
Ben - like, but not as much as Stephen
George - I have an Uncle George, which rules out this name.
Henry - too posh, I think rah rah Henry
Ivan - dont like (think Ivan the Terrible)
James - I'm possibly the only person on this planet, but dont like
Lucas - DH does not like
Peter - I like this but not when shortened to Pete
Robert - I like, but I know too many.

Theo - love, but DH does not like

OP posts:
EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 13/10/2010 18:05

:o

riiiiight...

How about:

Adam
Alex
Barnaby
Christian
Joseph
Leon
Liam

chickentwizzler · 14/10/2010 10:07

Thanks.

Adam - like, but cousins name (a big family rules out a lot of names)

Alex - I like, but DH does not like

Barnaby - to me, its rather a public school name

Christian - I like, but DH doesnt

Joseph - I don't like (Josef Fritzl and Joseph Stalin have spoile the name for me)

Leon - dont like

Liam - like, but to me its a fashionable name for 1970s and 1980s era (there were too many of them in school). Also its too soft a name for our harsh surname.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm erring with Stephen, and hoping he'll be called Stephen not Steve. Another name we quite like is Huw (DH is Welsh so it would have the welsh spelling).

OP posts:
mopsyflopsy · 14/10/2010 10:28

I think it is unrealistic to expect a Stephen to never to be called Steve...Smile

stressheaderic · 14/10/2010 10:56

Stephen is a good, solid name, I like it.

It's popular here in Merseyside because of Steven Gerrard and also it's Catholic association - there were 5 in my form class last year (and they ALL got shortened to Ste, think Ste G, Ste C, Ste J etc) - but it wouldn't put me off and I still really like it.
Other 'normal' boy's names I like are John, Christopher and Michael.
