Hello everyone

Expecting a boy in 10 weeks and very stuck on names. The trouble is neither of us hate any of the names on our shortlist so we aren't striking any off! Help us decide? Our surname is one of the many variants of Finley.

Albert (Dh's favourite, I'm not sure about two -ee sounding names i.e. Bertie Finley)
Edward (my fave)
George
Alasdair
Robin
Gordon

I also love Donald and Douglas but not at all sure about the abbreviations

thanks!

Albert - like Bertie, and think Albert is a great old mans name for a baby Smile Dont think the ee's together sound bad.
Edward - like
George - like
Alasdair - sorry, not a name I've ever favoured
Robin - nope
Gordon - nope. Its my bosses name though, which may influence me!
Donald - nope
Douglas - nope.

My favourite of your list would be Albert I think.

I would avoid names ending in -ie as I agree with you that they don't sound that great with Finley (e.g. Albie Finley, Bertie Finley).

I really like

Gordon Finley
Douglas Finley

Thanks!

Douglas is lovely isn't it but Doug?? I can't get Neighbours out of my head.

Edward, Robin or Douglas. All fab names and I like the short forms too. Didn't even think of Doug from Neighbours!

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 13:53

My vote is for Albert.

I wouldn't worry about the -ee. Almost any name can be turned into an -ee ending by kids.

Albert - Albie or Bertie.
Edward - Eddie.
George - unlikely, but could end up Georgie.
Alasdair - I know one who gets called Ali
Robin - I suppose this one doesn't go with -ee
Gordon - I know a little Gordie.

Pasiphae · 12/10/2010 14:35

I vote Albert too.

Gordon and Alasdair: not keen, Brown and Darling (even if it is a different spelling).

Edward and George are too safe and boring.
Robin is OK, but not as nice as Albert and goes less well with the surname.

poppydaisy · 12/10/2010 15:05

I vote for

Robin Finley
or
George Finley

and agree that Bertie or Albie Finley don't sound that great, if I'm honest.

bigkidsmademe · 12/10/2010 17:27

oh gosh - none of you agree either Grin I was hoping a consensus would emerge!

Bert is such an old man's name though, isn't it, I'm not sure I could call him that. Wee Bert Finley! Hee! So it might have to be Bertie if we do use Albert.

I like Gordon a lot but some people really hate it! Perhaps because of Brown.

I think we might end up just pulling it out of a hat!

Edward, George or Alasdair.

eatyourveg · 12/10/2010 18:00

George Edward Finley or Albert Edward Finley or Albert Edward Finley or there again Albert George Finley is lovely too

What great names, I can see your quandary.

I think if I had to go with one of them it would be Albert George Finley. He can call himself Albert, Al, Bert, Bertie or Alby - lots of flexibility when he comes to being a teenager and he wants to strike out and be his own man

issy123 · 12/10/2010 21:30

Albert (Albie),Edward or George

Thissideofchannel · 13/10/2010 11:27

George Finley
and
Robin Finley

sound lovely and go well with the surname.

bigkidsmademe · 13/10/2010 12:07

Thanks everyone!

It's between Albert and Edward now I think - middle name will be Matthew in honour of BIL. I think we might need to see him before we finally decide!
