Hi,

Although I am English, we don't live in the UK, so have no idea what names are popular right now. I have come up with a list and would really appreciate your thoughts.

Please feel free to be honest - I can take it!

Thanks,

Fulla x

Betty
Dakota
Dolly
Dulcie
Idalia
Isolde
Eden
Ella
Layla
Lola
Marnie
Poppy
Rosa
Valentina
Verity

I like Eden, Lola or Ella (quite popular though). Dulcie and Betty sound like OAPs. Marnie and Dolly are terrible (sorry!). I LOVE Valentina, however I am biased as I have a (2 yr old) Valentina. I love her name, we call her V for short sometimes, (mainly when writing her name). But we have always called her Valentina, never felt the need to shorten it. I too detest Tina or Val as nicknames, her nursery sometimes call her Valley which i don't mind. Everyone always comments on what a beatiful name she has!!

Betty - nope, too 1950s
Dakota - nope, too Hollywood brat
Dolly - nope, too Parton
Dulcie - like it
Idalia - nope, sounds made up to me
Isolde - nope, too Shakespearian
Eden - like it.
Ella - like it. But so do millions of others.
Layla - nope, too Clapton
Lola - nope, too showgirl
Marnie - like it. But what's it short for? Armani?
Poppy - nope, too girly
Rosa - like it.
Valentina - nope, too ... Valentina
Verity - like it

Minione · 12/10/2010 18:41

Love Dulcie, quite like Isolde and Dolly.
The rest are a bit meh, but none of them are horrible!

Faaamily · 12/10/2010 18:55

Love Rosa. Simple, feminine and classic.

Quite like Valentina, too. Very pretty.

I am not a fan of cutesy names like Dulcie, Dolly, Poppy, Marnie etc.

Dakota and Eden are awful, sorry.

cazzybabs · 12/10/2010 19:01

i like poppy (as i have one) and verity

BertieBasset · 12/10/2010 19:03

I know a Dakota (in the US)and an Eden who are both boys!

I think Rosa, Ella and Lola are all very popular, but nice. Verity is lovely and a bit more un usual.

luciemule · 12/10/2010 19:05

Dulcie and lola are my faves Smile

Whelk · 12/10/2010 19:12

I love Ella and Rosa. don't like the rest.. I like classy simple names,

largeginandtonic · 12/10/2010 19:18

I know a Glastonbury Eden (boy)

I also know a Dakota (dog) small, fluffy Pommeranian.

missmiss · 12/10/2010 19:29

I teach a lovely Dulcie. Thumbs up.

FullaDoll · 12/10/2010 20:26

To largeginandtonic,

Loved your post, thank you! Actually, I would have a house full of boys over a house full of girls any day. But, well, I am feeling a bit outnumbered...

Anyway, if anybody is interested, this is how I came up with my list...

Betty (after Betty Page)
Dolly (after Dolly Parton)
Dulcie (my Nana)
Idalia (after a beautiful, inspirational Mexican woman I knew)
Isolde (actually, it's Wagner, not Shakespeare)
Eden (a strong association with my name - I am DEVASTATED that it has become so popular)
Ella (after my first car)
Layla (ouch, love Clapton!)
Lola (also love the Kinks - showing my age!)
Marnie (from the Hitchcock movie
Poppy (actually, on reflection, not so cool)
Rosa (after Rosa Luxembourg)
Valentina (just love this name)
Verity (just love this also).

Gosh, it's so hard, isn't it?

From your last list, you said "just love this name" for Valentina and Verity....for no reason other than you love them. I would go with one of those and have a name related to a person you know (nan) or something you remember fondly (music) as a middle name perhaps?

ZellyTBaby · 14/10/2010 12:02

Rosa - this is my favourite girl's name :)

yummymummie1 · 14/10/2010 12:10

Idalia -- a bit over the top and madey uppey
Isolde -- Beautiful
Eden -- a bit overused
Ella -- way overused. very second girl in my local park is named Ella or Ellie
Layla -- Nice
Lola -- Nice
Marnie -- rhymes with Sarnie
Poppy -- too frilly
Rosa -- nice but meh
Valentina -- Beautiful
Verity -- very twee

Lilka · 14/10/2010 21:17

Betty - Old woman, albeit a kind and friendly type

Dakota - I like it a lot, although it is very LA I agree

Dolly - She is Betty's clone, down to the last tiny white hair

Dulcie - Not really, I think of a girl like Ermengarde in A Little Princess. Dull.

Idalia - Try hard

Isolde - Good name. I think of a rich woman in a big house somewhere in Europe who wears designer only. Or a talented musician

Eden - Beautiful. End of.

Ella - Too cutesy

Layla - Uh...no. She is a nine year old in a sparkly minidress shwoing her bum, and God knows what'll happen in a few years time.

Actually, I like the name, it's just the spelling. Leila is beautiful.

Lola - See Layla

Marnie - Don't like it

Poppy - Bad association here. Its not a bad name

Rosa - Beautiful

Valentina - Try hard unless you actually are very posh, which sounds awful to say. Therefore don't use it at all, beautiful as it sounds

Verity - Pretty name

BelligerentGhoul · 14/10/2010 21:19

Love Isolde and Verity. Like Poppy.

Don't like the others.
