Alternatives to Marion

SouthsideSue · 12/10/2010 09:48

My husbands Mum and My Mum are both called Marion and we would like to honour them by using their name as a middle name. However I feel that having that next to our surname is my mother inlaws name with another name stuck infront of it Wink and we would like to use something a little different! Can anyone provide me with some alternatives or other forms of Marion.
Thank you. xx

Anne-Marie
Iona
all the others I thought of have already been mentioned.

DinARGGHHHrod · 12/10/2010 10:04

Really like the Biblical Miriam or Austen's Marianne

BuntyPenfold · 12/10/2010 10:51

I love Miriam too.
I once met a Mariamne, who was very beautiful and clever.

Or Marigold?

fayc84 · 12/10/2010 11:58

The Scottish version of Marion is Mirren. I know one girl (aged eight) with the name but had never heard of it before. I think it's quite pretty though.

ed1979 · 12/10/2010 17:13

How about Merryn? Not quite the same, but not too far removed either!!!

Ishouldhavechosenagoldfish · 12/10/2010 21:02

Could you use it as a third name, or have another middle name after?

maktaitai · 12/10/2010 21:09

Ooh Mirren is gorgeous, use that, use that.

meala · 12/10/2010 21:10

Hi there

the Gaelic translation of Marion is Muireall (or Muriel).

3thumbedwitch · 13/10/2010 00:06

Actually there is another one I know of, hadn't remembered it before:
Merrian

I used to know someone called that, lovely variation.

russiandolly · 13/10/2010 06:55

MariamMari/Mhari

chimchar · 13/10/2010 06:59

how about mari? i know a mari...not sure if its welsh, or a shortened form of something else, but i love it.

3thumbedwitch · 13/10/2010 08:33

Mhari is pronounced Vari though - I know a Mhairi and she told me after I'd made a mistake with it Blush. Should have known but I'd forgotten that in Gaelic, the mh makes a V sound, same as the bh does.

deliakate · 13/10/2010 13:08

I know a Mhari and she doesn't pronounce it V....

QuickLookBusy · 13/10/2010 13:14

I know a Marianna. Think it is lovely.

expectingno3 · 13/10/2010 13:23

Mariella?
I second Merryn and Mirren - they're lovely names. Never heard of them before but they may be making it onto my list!

freerangeeggs · 14/10/2010 19:11

Mairi and Mhairi are actually the same name, just different cases. Mairi is pronounced with an M, Mhairi with a V, but if I understand correctly in Gaelic any one person would be known as both in different situations. Am I right or wrong?

mathanxiety · 14/10/2010 19:33

Maribel
Marisol
Mariel
Maura
Muireann

Silkstalkings · 14/10/2010 20:57

Merryn after the Cornish saint
Marianne is the best though, v classy and pretty.

Caro1302 · 14/10/2010 21:02

I love Merryn, that would definitely be a contender for my next theoretical DD.

I once knew a Marianthe (pronounced Mari-ann-thee) which is really pretty.

chaya5738 · 14/10/2010 21:06

Miriam.

Jic · 17/10/2010 01:34

Meryem

herjazz · 17/10/2010 01:46

If you really want to honour them just go with Marion. It's only a middle name. Otherwise just pick anything else you like. Once you deviate from Marion it's not really about them

Hope that doesn't sound rude. I say this as someone who as used some dull middle names for this reason!
