Names to go with boring, short surname please!

Hello! Would be grateful for suggestions for boys and girls. We already have a DS called Jude, which I absolutely love and might give you an idea of what I like. Prefer the slightly unusual / old fashioned / romantic sorts of names but hate anything too top 10. Plus anything too long or flamboyant can sound silly with our surname. Suggestions please!

Chad?

The only other Jude I know has a brother called Emmanuel.

Also you could go with Jonah, Joel, Nathaniel, Ezra, Ezekiel

Or girls, Rosamond, Miranda, Juliet, Arianne

Ooh, some great suggestions, thank you. Particularly like Iris, and in fact most of your suggestions, londres. Think we need to go bit more unusual though, quite a few of the names are quite common round here, like Isabella or Finn. Want to avoid names beginning with j or e. Any other thoughts very welcome!

So nice to hear all of these! Like atticus a lot but think it's a step too far for DH... Inigo is great too... Things to think about now but still open to suggestions. Thanks again.

Your ideas are right up my street, mentalfloss! Love those from Shakespeare. Viola is really pretty. I'd rather have Estella than Stella (yes, love Dickens) but worried about it with an E surname; what do you think?

Arlo is my current fave boys name. If this overdue girl in my being turns out to be a boy, I'm going to fight tooth and nail for suggest-- Arlo.

Viola is pretty I agree.

lowrib · 09/10/2010 10:18

Aaron
Orlando
Rowan
Cornelius

Ariadne
Miranda
Serena
Ornella
Scarlett

MentalFloss · 09/10/2010 14:52

I think Estella depends on what the E surname is.

So I think Estella would work with say Evans but not with say Ewe.

If you love Dickens then I really like:
Arabella (Pickwick Papers)
Clara (Great Expectations)
Belle (Christmas Carol)
Madeline (Nicholas Nickleby)
Ada (Bleak House)
Sophy (David Copperfield)
Amy (Little Dorrit)
Esther (Bleak House)
Caroline (Caddy) (Bleak House)
Clemency (The Battle of Life)
Dora (David Copperfield)

God, you can tell I'm an English teacher can't you!

tammytoby · 09/10/2010 15:29

Clara
and
Quentin

would both sound good with a short surname and are unlikely to be shortened (they are my sister's children and they have a short one syllable surname).
