As long as your surname isn't Marsh...sorry, couldn't resist that.

Kwini · 07/10/2010 16:13

Hee... saw that one coming! But no, it isn't :)

LynetteScavo · 07/10/2010 16:22

Marsh.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Acanthus · 07/10/2010 16:23

I can only think of sheep, sorry. Do you absolutely have to make up a name? You couldn't go for one that people have heard of? Grin

seeker · 07/10/2010 16:31

There are actually names in the world that are meant for people, you know, not geographical features, weather events or animals!

ChippyMinton · 07/10/2010 16:32

Or surname Lock.
He may spend a lifetime saying 'no it's not Rodney'

littledawley · 07/10/2010 16:32

Sorry but I just think Marsh.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/10/2010 16:33

I remember a ghastly stay at a campsite in New Romney.

What a godforsaken hole that is.

No it's a no from me.

Kwini · 07/10/2010 16:35

Um... so no one here has read Aurora Leigh, then? By, y'know, Elizabeth Browning?

Kwini · 07/10/2010 16:45

(seeker, I'm wondering: do you hang about the baby names threads just waiting for names to shoot down?)

OP posts:
littledawley · 07/10/2010 17:24

I have read the book but first thoughts of the name is Marsh. I also found the book to be dreary and all a bit tragic.....

Bagpusstree · 07/10/2010 17:28

Hmmm, not keen personally. I would think pardon? Rodney? Or Romilly? (sp)

Sorry, not got much inspiration for alternatives either!

Kwini · 07/10/2010 17:29

Ok, well seeing as DH and I may not be staying in this country for long, in which case all 'Marsh' associations will be removed...can anyone comment on the name for its own sake?

OP posts:
littledawley · 07/10/2010 17:34

It sounds like you really love the name and this thread might just make you realise that you want to use it regardless of what other people think.

If you love it, go for it Smile

MummyLovesSadie · 07/10/2010 17:46

Just don't like it, I used to live in Kent & I'm going to say the same as everyone else - Marsh, sorry.

Kwini · 07/10/2010 17:47

Ha ha - no fear, littledawley! I won't be basing any final decision, positive or negative, purely on opinions gleaned from an internet forum. That said, I am interested to hear what people think of the name on its own merit, IYSWIM...

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 07/10/2010 18:39

I have a Romilly (spelling fine Bagpusstree) and she gets called all sorts including Romney and Bromley and Romany.

I don't know if you knew, but Romilly is also a boys' name (started out as one, but has been used most recently for girls - Augustus John, Welsh painter, had a son named Romilly - actually he had some great names for his kids...)

Sunlightdances · 08/10/2010 02:52

I've never heard of Romney marsh and wouldn't know what it was anyway. I quite like the name - it's very unusual.

nooka · 08/10/2010 05:19

Makes me think either Romney Marsh or Romanies. It just doesn't seem like a name to me. But then I like names than mean something and have a bit of a pedigree, rather than words that just sound nice.

EldritchCleavage · 08/10/2010 10:54

OK, going on the sound of the word alone, I actually do like it. Would you go for the old-fashioned 'Rumney' pronunciation or say it as spelled? I prefer the former. Despite the geographical connotations, there is something quite romantic about it somehow, and I'm not usually remotely receptive to the 'unusual' name choices on here...

Kwini · 08/10/2010 11:08

Cheers, therisalight - Romilly is lovely! I checked out AJ's kids' names on Wiki, and see what you mean. Poppet is dear :)

Nooka, would it make a difference to you that the root meaning of Romney is the Welsh for river?

EC, I think I'd go with as spelled... thanks for your feedback!

OP posts:
thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 08/10/2010 11:23

I actually wanted Romilly Poppet on the bc but DH vetoed - but she gets called that anyway (mostly by DH, weirdly).

I think EldritchCleavage is right - Romney does have a romantic quality to it.

I think you should go for it - try to imagine how you'd feel if you didn't use it. Would you always feel that pang of regret if you went for something more mainstream?

We got lots of Hmm faces when we divulged the name beofre Romilly was born (SH's family are used to Lucy, Emma, Emily type names). I'm really glad we took no notice.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 08/10/2010 11:24

DH - not SH (sausage fingers!)

PestoEatsPastiesandSurfboards · 08/10/2010 11:25
