Is it very cruel to call a little girl...

I really love unusual names but be honest with me, is it evil to call a little girl:

Apple
or...
Elfie

DH thinks so. I did have my heart set of Florence after my favourite cousin-in-law, but the Camerons have nicked it :(

PLOEASE don;t choose a name because you think it's cure. Teenagers and adult women don;t necessarily want to be cute.

And you are naming an adult woman, not a baby. An you seriouly can't call anyone the slang name for a testicle!

piscesmoon · 04/10/2010 22:24

Don't do it. I can't see why the Cameron's using the name Florence has any bearing on it. If you like it then use it.

lola0109 · 04/10/2010 22:27

My niece gets called elfy but her name is erin louise f....

Could you do something like this?

You could have florence as a middle name?

piscesmoon · 04/10/2010 22:30

Apologies for apostrophe -for some reason my finger seems to type it with an s!

Stick to the suggestions in a book of names rather than a plant catalogue.

paisleyleaf · 04/10/2010 22:51

Even if you're sure she'll stay tall and thin, I don't think Elfie is fair on a person.

TiggyD · 04/10/2010 22:55

Tiggy is a sensible name. Call her that.

Spidermama · 04/10/2010 22:56

Elfie's nice. I knew an Elfie.

mamatomany · 04/10/2010 22:57

What about Aiofe ? At least it is a name and you could call her Elfie.

TiggyD · 04/10/2010 23:00

Aiofe?! You just accidently typed that when you nodded off and your head hit the keyboard. That's not a name.

NKinDXB · 05/10/2010 06:42

I don't think Apple is the worst of celeb baby names. Quite sweet. But agree with those who said it looks like copying Gwyneth/Chris.

I like Avery (surprise surprise DH didn't!) and apparently that is an old name meaning Elf.

notagrannyyet · 05/10/2010 06:46

Flower names are fine. But not fruit!

Elfie is OK, but Florence is much nicer. I wouldn't worry about DC baby having the same name.

gorionine · 05/10/2010 06:54

Why should you not call you r DD Florence because the Camerons have called their DD Florence? Unless you are related to him and adding a Florence to the family I really do not see the problem. Plenty of other florences about why cary about this one in particular?

ramonaquimby · 05/10/2010 07:48

tiggyd - Aiofe is a name - it's Irish and pronounced Eee-fa

SandStorm · 05/10/2010 07:51

Unless you're close friends with the Camerons I can't see what relevance it has that they called their daughter Florence.

Without meaning to upset I think both the other names are a bit silly.

FellatioNelson · 05/10/2010 07:53

But although it is currently a very popular middle class name, it is not yet common. But it will become very mainstream now. It always happens when someone high profile picks a name. It's happened with Noah (Chris Evans) and it happened with Molly (Philip Schofield) Cameron (Ulrika Jonsson and Carol Vorderman) Chloea and Jack (Richard and Judy) and any character name or actor's name that appears in a popular soap (Courtney, Bradley, Beth, Isla, etc etc.)

Best avoid anything where you were inspired by anyone in the media - because you won't be the only one! (unless of course you don't mind in which case go ahead.)

GooseyLoosey · 05/10/2010 07:54

The Irish name is Aoife not Aiofe (just in case you go for it OP).

piscesmoon · 05/10/2010 08:05

What is wrong with main stream names? To my mind you either love Florence or you don't-I really can't see why it is suddenly nice if unusual but not nice if others use it.

mrswoodentop · 05/10/2010 08:11

I work in a school and we have just registered a Strawberry.Coincidentally it was strawberry crumble for pudding at lunch yesterday.

frakkinnakkered · 05/10/2010 08:20

Strawberry is cruel :(

Elfie as a nickname is lovely, just as long as she has something she can replace it with when she's older! I knew a wonderful (and wickedly funny) old lady whose name was Philomena, nicknamed Elphie.

Or why not have an El... first name and a Fe/Fi... second name and run 2 together to make Elphie as a nickname. Like Elizabeth Fiona - El/fi.

notagrannyyet · 05/10/2010 08:20

Hope her surname wasn't Jelly.

LaTristesse · 05/10/2010 09:26

I was tempted by Elfin when we were chosing... would that work?

I don't like Apple FWIW...

Threelittleducks · 05/10/2010 09:31

Don't do it!! What if you call her Elfie and she ends up being HUGE?

What about Evie?

Kid has to go to school at some point.....

mopsyflopsy · 05/10/2010 09:38

Threelittleducks, but what about all the Graces that aren't graceful?

Do meanings matter that much?
