What is the most gender neutral name?

There are a lot of unisex names, but in practice they tend to be associated with one gender or the other.

So what do you think are genuine neutral names?

Although many of these are shortened forms of different male/female names

Sam, Alex and Jo definitely.

Although Morgan too. For some reason when I hear of a girl called Morgan, I think that is a boys name, and when I hear a boy of Morgan I think it's a girls name.

TrillianAstra · 03/10/2010 23:14

I think you need to start a lot of threads along the lines of 'if you heard a mother shouting for Sam in the park, would you expect a boy or girl to come running up?' Then count up the responses.

And Robyn/Robin

Met a girl on holiday a few years ago called Robyn - heard her parents calling her, but couldn't work out whether she was a girl or boy, she had fairly unisex clothing, short hair, and was about 7 at the time. Turned out to be a fairly tomboyish girl - who struck up a great friendship with our ds who is 2 years younger. We're still all in touch! Smile

with Morgan I ask is that a boy or a girl to my kids when they mention a Morgan in their class..

Alex . Sam, Jordan Billy. Chris I expect to be male I accept that they may be female but I view them male..

Hilary Lindsay and Vivian I expect to be female (again I know they can be used for men)

I think perhaps Rowan is a truly unisex name

my own as well Lonnie but omg do NOT use it for any of your kids its awful

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/10/2010 23:18

Well, this shows how things change over the years; many of the names mentioned as unisex, I perceive to be male! Blush [auld gimmer]

SoMuchToBits · 03/10/2010 23:20

Just thought of another - Taylor.

Always met only girls with this name before - but I help in ds's school library, and in one class this year there are 2 Taylors. Turns out one is male and one female.

Sam.

Someone said somethingabout if you heard a name called in the park would you expect a girl or a boy to come running up? More to the point, after reading lots of name threads, I would ask if you heard a name called in the park, how many legs would the name's owner run up on?
