We have had Noah and Isaiah as 'picked out' names for years. But as both are firmly in the top 100 now (and even higher in the US, where I'm from and where we'll be for a good part of the year) we've been thinking of alternatives.

Can't have any 'H' names as our surname begins with H, which is a huge shame as I love Hugo, Henry, and Harry.

Can I have opinions on the following names please (honest opinions):

Asher
Beckett
Casian/Cassian
Elias
Jasper
Jude
Jonah
Julian
Marlowe
Oren
Rylan
Seren
Theo (possibly Theodore)

Don't like any of them apart from the H names., Don't see why you can't have a first name begin with the same letter as surname.

Starberries · 02/10/2010 13:23

DP's rule, not mine.

I like Elias, Jonah and Theodore.
Asher, Jasper, Julian and Jude are fine.
Becket, Cassian, Marlowe, Oren, Rylan and Seren I don't like.

Good luck :)

littleoldme · 02/10/2010 13:25

If you love Noah and Isaiah I'd use them. My DS has a very popular name but is no less individual because of it. It won't be as much of an issue you think it is.

ShowOfHands · 02/10/2010 13:28

Asher- no, surname
Beckett- no, surname
Casian/Cassian- I like Cassian but prefer Cassius
Elias- like this
Jasper- again I like but is v popular atm and in the west country is slang for a wasp
Jude- v v now and is going to date
Jonah- great name
Julian- it's okay but considered posh round these here parts
Marlowe- no, again it's a surname
Oren- nope
Rylan- really no
Seren- this is a girl's name
Theo (possibly Theodore)- v nice, achingly middle class but I like it

Skyrg · 02/10/2010 13:30

Seren is definitely a girl's name. I would personally avoid Julian because it's too like Julia. Cassian may be called Cassie... Marlowe is a surname to me, as is Beckett.

Otherwise I think they're all fine. I would go for Theodore on Birth Certificate though, and bear in mind that it's becoming very popular.

BelligerentGhoul · 02/10/2010 13:36

Asher - I like this; not normally fond of names that sound like surnames but this one, I like
Beckett - awful
Casian/Cassian - not fond
Elias - love this
Jasper - not fond
Jude - nice
Jonah - God, no
Julian - ok
Marlowe - hideous
Oren - no
Rylan - sounds made up
Seren - awful
Theo (possibly Theodore) - nice

I like Noah too.

BessieBoots · 02/10/2010 13:40

Asher- It will sound like ASha IMO- More like a girl's name.
Beckett- That is very cool if you are, n fact, Beckett fans.
Casian/Cassian- Never heard this, I like it.
Elias- DS2 was nearly this. Love it.
Jasper- There used to e biscuits called Jaspers, I alwasy think of them when I hear this name. But then, I like biscuits. :)
Jude- Love it.
Jonah- Love it
Julian- Not keen.
Marlowe- OK withot the e.
Oren- This is Welsh for orange.
Rylan- No. Ryland?
Seren- Welsh for star- It's a girl's name.
Theo (possibly Theodore)- OK, very popular here.

Good luck!

LetThereBeRock · 02/10/2010 13:41

Asher Horrid
Beckett Horrid
Cassian is ok,though personally prefer Caspian
Elias Yes
Jasper Yes
Jude No
Jonah Yes
Julian Yes
Marlowe No
Oren No
Rylan No
Seren Girl's name
Theo Yes

yggdrasil · 02/10/2010 13:50

Seren is def a girls's name

However Saran is not, it is African/Hindi. Definitely a boy's name.

Oren is welsh for orange but I don't think even in Wales you'd be laughed at for this. It doesn't sound that welsh.

My name begins with the same letter as my surname, btw, and this has never caused me any major problems.

You know, my son has an unusual name with a common short form. He much much prefers to be called by the usual short form, which tbh I don't love. I also accidentally gave my daughter a top 50 name (it shot right up the year before she was born-too soon for me to realise how popular it would be). You know what? They LOVE having really common names!

If I could rename my kids I'd def go for unusual longer names which abbreviate to something top 50.

"Jasper- There used to e biscuits called Jaspers, I alwasy think of them when I hear this name. But then, I like biscuits."

lololol

Pernickety · 02/10/2010 13:52

I like Jonah best out of your list.

Starberries · 02/10/2010 14:06

Asher's not a surname, by the way, it's a very legit Biblical name which is the sense I mean for it.

Starberries · 02/10/2010 14:07

And I'm surprised at the number of people saying girls name for Seren, in every baby name book we own it's considered unisex, and I love the meaning of 'star'.

OP posts:
Skyrg · 02/10/2010 14:09

Sterling is the boy's name meaning star.

It's a Welsh girl's name.

yggdrasil · 02/10/2010 14:28

I think the trouble with Seren is that it is a very common (atm) welsh girls' name. All it will take is one famous Seren in 10-20 years time, and there will inevitably be at least one as it is SO common in Wales, and any boy called Seren will probably like their name a bit less.

I suppose it would be a bit like a name like Hilary or Vivian, which ARE technically boys names too, but really, unless you are the son of a Labour peer, say, hard to carry off.

Rach109 · 02/10/2010 17:06

I like Theo and Elias

rubbersoul · 02/10/2010 17:10

I love Jude, Jonah and Julian Smile

preghead · 02/10/2010 17:56

Only thing I would say with Theo if you are looking for unusual is, whilst there are none in my 5y olds class, there are 5 in my 3y olds class at Nursery - think it has been v popular last few years (here, Southeast, anyway)

Manda25 · 02/10/2010 23:04

I never understand why people are so opposed to 'sir names' being first names especially when the like of Jack and Oliver are sir names ...and in the top 10 !
I like all your names !
