I think my favourite is Elain. There is a little girl called Elain in DS1's class.

Elin and Efa are nice too, my niece is called Elin.

I prefer Carys to Cerys, but then I have a Carys myself so am biased! I find Carys is less common than Cerys, there are lots of girls called Cerys at my DC's school.

My least favourite is Ariene (which I have never heard of before).

Arian may mean silver but it is also the common word for money. What do you think of that? That said I love Arianwen (sp?).

I have two dcs with uncommon welsh names and support your ideas re spelling them correctly. Otherwise they are not Welsh really are they?

However, have a serious thought to how others will pronounce them, I have serious problems, esp with my ds, dinner ladies, pharmacist, doctor, dentist, holiday reps have all mispronounced his name to the point that he does not recognise who is calling him. So, second dc got an easier to pronounce name, which is less problematic.

This would happen with all of your choices except Elin (although she will get called Helen or Elinor) and Cerys

I think Elin is a wonderful name. Short, easy to spell & minimal mispronunciation potential.

(Although DiddyDragon only has 3 letters in her name, it causes no end of confusion regarding its pronounciation. I was surprised as I didn't think it was that unusual. But we're the other side of the Severn Bridge now, which may have a bearing.)

I don't understand Ariene (the spelling I mean). There are no silent 'e's' in Welsh. It would be better to spell it Arien and leave it like that.

I like Arien though, unusual as I've never heard it before and I'm Welsh. Of course I've heard of arian but never as a name.

Elin is nice,

Also love Delyth

For context, I grew up in (North) Wales.

Ariene - not a name I know and echo others' comment re it not "looking" Welsh (not doubting you, just saying). It is pretty in a Tolkein-esque way and I would pronounce it as you said.

Cerys - love this, and also Carys.

Efa - with a Welsh backround I knew to prounounce the f as a v but suspect your daughter would spend a lot of time correcting people.

Elain - Not a name I've ever come across and would instinctively pronounce as Elaine.

Elin - Pretty.

It's more common but I also love Megan.

Ariene and Cerys my faves.

I love Elin and Cerys (like Carys even better). Also like Efa.

I have an elin and a cerys so those are my favourite ones! I chose them so my english in laws would be able to pronounce them. And then had to listen to them being called kerry and elaine. Sigh.
