Can you help us decide between Lucy and Sylvie?

I like Sylvie (or Silvie) but dh prefers Lucy and has yet to agree to Sylvie. Lucy is lovely but its very popular. Should I (can I?) hold out for Sylvie? She'll be sister to Susannah. Opinions please!

Lucy

The same initials for your dd's would be enough to put me off.

However I do Love LUCY!!

belindarose · 30/09/2010 12:31

Sylvie is lovely. Doesn't go with our surname (almost rhymes) or else it would definitely have been a contender for DD. Lucy nice. Not that popular amongst littlies round here.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 30/09/2010 12:34

Sylvie is lovely. And yes, Lucy is lovely, but there are many, many, many little girls named Lucy where we are.

Also, for me, both names are cute for babies and little girls, but Sylvie seems more fitting for an adult woman than Lucy. Lucy on a grown woman, to my mind, anyway, is a bit twee.

nigglewiggle · 30/09/2010 12:37

Sylvie is lovely. Not sure about having two children with the same initial though. But, if you're not bothered by that I'd go for Sylvie.

sybilfaulty · 30/09/2010 12:42

Lucy every time. Classic, timeless and fits a woman or a child. Don't agree that it's twee on an adult, but that's as well as it's DD1's name.

Sylvie pretty and round these parts more popular than Lucy. I think it fits a child better than an adult but perhaps that's just me.

Susannah is gorgeous but I think S and Lucy better than S and Sylvie.

Lucy.

Not very keen on Sylvie.

NoahAndTheWhale · 30/09/2010 12:46

I like Sylvie. DH's cousin has a DD called Sylvie. I like it that both DD (Alice) and Sylvie are named after DH's granny Smile

NoahAndTheWhale · 30/09/2010 12:47

And don't think that having the same initial matters.

PaulineCampbellJones · 30/09/2010 12:51

Sylvie is really nice, don't know of any at DD's nursery or otherwise.

Hedwig3 · 30/09/2010 13:16

Both are lovely.

I only know 2 Lucys - age 6 and 38!

jellybeans · 30/09/2010 13:17

Love Lucy, not keen on Sylvie. Too much like Sylvia..old ladyish.

leothelioness · 30/09/2010 13:20

Lucy

BuntyPenfold · 30/09/2010 15:33

I only know 2 Lucys - age 26 and 49.

yellowflowers · 30/09/2010 18:55

I like Sylvie. Am not a fan of Lucy though I know many and most people seem to like it

ByTheSea · 30/09/2010 18:58

There are a lot of girls named Lucy around here. So I'd go for Sylvie!

meadowlarks · 30/09/2010 19:53

I once met a French prostitute called Sylvie. It's a long story.

pranma · 30/09/2010 20:12

I really like Sylvie-Lucy is very very popular but it is lovely too.

Faaamily · 30/09/2010 21:08

Sylvie is lovely.

Lucy is a bit wet. Too girly girly for my liking.

janx · 30/09/2010 21:17

Slyvie is lovely. I know 6 Lucy's and 1 Lucie

janx · 30/09/2010 21:17

Sorry meant to say sylvie

emmyloulou · 30/09/2010 22:09

Lucy.

ja9 · 30/09/2010 22:10

Love Sylvie! Lucy lovely too, but Sylvie more unusual and i think it goes beautifully with susannah (like that really matters?!)

ChynaDoll2006 · 30/09/2010 23:09

Sylvie.

Can't stand Lucy sorry.

smother · 30/09/2010 23:35

Love Sylvie - more sophisticated and more memorable than Lucy although I like Lucy too.

Think Sylvia on birth certificate would be good to give her options in future.

I personally don't think it matters to give sibs the same initials

Whelk · 01/10/2010 08:56

They are both lovely names. I think I would choose Lucy though as I would feel as though I should have some French connections to use a French name like Sylvie.
By the way I love Susannah.
