Hi all,

Everyone keeps saying how popular Maisie is, but it's in the 60's on the top 100 list from last year (which I don't think is that popular!) and I have only ever heard of one and she would be 8 now. So how popular is it where you are really? How many do you know and where do you live?

Thanks

PS is Holly a weird name choice if not born near Christmas?

Popularity of names can be very regional. Something else to bear in mind when you are looking at the statistics is that its just for that year, there will be many others born in the surrounding years.

I know lots of Maisies, talking at least 1 in each class at school and nursery.

And yes to your last question, I think it is.

Ineedsomesleep · 30/09/2010 08:14

Forgot to say that popularity isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you choose Maisie you know that lots of people will like your choice Smile

NoTeaForMe · 30/09/2010 09:00

I understand that Ineedsomesleep , it's kind of why I also asked about where you live to help me know the regions it seems most popular! The last few years top 100 Maisie has only featured in the lower half.

Anymore thoughts? Anyone else?

Thanks

I think what also happens is that there are trends for names. So a name might not be popular in isolation, but names like it are ten a penny...

Isobel/Isabelle/Isabella/Ysabel etc
Ella/Ellie/Evie/Eleanor/Elinora etc
Maisie/Martha/Millie/Mollie/Daisy etc
Millie/Lily/Tilly etc
Luke/Luka/Lucas etc

You get the same sounding names cropping up all the time and Maisie falls into the cutesy, girly category that's so popular atm.

Ineedsomesleep · 30/09/2010 09:46

Sorry notea, I missed the bit where you asked where we live, I'm in the NW. Agree with SOH, cutesy girls names are very, very popular right now.

bundlebelly · 30/09/2010 09:58

I only know one Maisie and she is gorgeous. You should go for it if you love the name.

And I think Holly is fine for non christmassy girl too. I know one born in august and it never even crossed my mind that it was 'wrong' time of year!

DetectivePotato · 30/09/2010 09:59

I would say its popular. Can't believe its only in the 60's.

I don't think Holly is weird if not born at xmas.

Our DS's name was number 3 when we chose it, we liked the name, couldn't give a toss how popular it was. Our name for soon to be DD is also pretty high up the list but we have had that picked for about 8 years so we finally get to use it!

Choose what you like, bollocks to anything else. Smile

NoTeaForMe · 30/09/2010 10:08

Thanks Detective we do love the name, my husband especially! After working in schools for years i'm just conscious that there are some names that appear 3-4 times in a year group and to me that is too popular. I'm not bothered about a unique name but I don't want a ten-a-penny name either! Does that make sense?

OP posts:
Ineedsomesleep · 30/09/2010 10:13

Yes that does make sense but that's a very hard one to judge. Evie is only number 10 in the charts yet there are tonnes of them in my town. Almost every girl born for the last 4 years is called Evie and if it's not Evie then its Eva, Ava, Eve, Evelyn or Evangaline. So any Evie starting school around here will probably have at least one other in her class.

Not sure how to find out what's popular where you are, perhaps the MW will know?

nancydrewrocked · 30/09/2010 10:15

I know a few Maisies.

I only have the 2008 name stats but apparently there were 1040 Maisie's in 2008.

Remember it is all spelt Maisy (309) /Maisey (68) / Maizie (66) Mayzee (3).

Which makes almost 1500 "Maisies", combined with 960 Maya's (which is very similar) you have got almost 2500 children with that name for 2008 - which puts it in top 15.

DetectivePotato · 30/09/2010 10:15

It does make sense and it is interesting to know about different regions.

I haven't heard of an Evie where I am. My DS's name I do hear quite a bit but the name we have chose for DD, that is supposedly popular, I haven't actually heard where I am either.

ShowOfHands · 30/09/2010 10:27

Spelling and variations are important, good point. I had this discussion on another thread. Finn might not be that high up on the list but combine Finbar, Finley, Finlay, Finegan, Finn, Fin, Finnian etc and it shoots up.

smother · 30/09/2010 23:22

Show of hands comment surprised me, putting the name Martha in with

Maisie/Martha/Millie/Mollie/Daisy etc

as being ten a penny names...

Is Martha really that type of name??

(sorry, I realise this thread is about Maisie but just got me thinking about popularity of other names)

Ineedsomesleep · 01/10/2010 09:21

I'd say Martha was pretty popular. I know as many Martha's as I do Millys and Tillys.

nigglewiggle · 01/10/2010 09:27

I know 2 Maisies and I live in West Yorkshire. I wouldn't think of it as a particularly ubiquitous name.

If you used Hollie instead of Holly it would be less chrismassy.

I know 2 little Maisies and one adult. I think for a little girl it is sweet and cute, but as an adult it seems a bit silly.

telsa · 01/10/2010 09:45

I know one Maisie - about 13 - and kenw an 80 year old one, now sadly gone. Areas - London and Derby.

MamaLazarou · 01/10/2010 09:45

I've never met a Maisie. I live in Kent. Not keen on the name: to me it brings to mind someone simpering and a bit thick.

3plusbump · 01/10/2010 09:48

I think it's really difficult to tell just how popular a name will be in your area, pre-school or school...

I was listening to the boys in the back of the car on the school run this morning talking about a football match at school. 'Harry H kicked the ball to Harry G who passed to Harry F' - You get the idea! 'Harry' is incredibly popular in our school. However my eldest son has a top 10 boys name but has never had another one in his class all the way through primary...

So, I think what I'm saying (in a very long-winded wayBlush) is you'll never be sure just how popular a name is going to be, so go with what you both love and what will suit your little girl.

Oh, and I love Holly / Hollie - very pretty name for a little girl yet strong enough to sound right for an adult too :)

QueenSconetta · 01/10/2010 10:07

Notea, I think Holly is better if not born around Christmas. Naming your child Holly because she was born at Christmas really makes be cringe for some unreasonable reason.

ApertureScience · 01/10/2010 21:17

I only know one Maisie aged 8. I am having a popularity issue with DD2's name (thread started today about it) I don't think Maisie is too popular, the top ten are probably ones to avoid and even then it's luck of the draw as to how many YOU will bump in to!
I have an August Holly and I am always complimented on her name :) I saw a month by month names popularity list and Holly (although only about 23 on the overall list) is number 1 in December :O Seriously, it's cooler if NOT around Christmas!

ValiumSingleton · 01/10/2010 21:49

Yes QS, agree, it's like getting engaged on 14/02

Apologies to anybody who did that!

Ineedsomesleep · 02/10/2010 08:53

Aperture can we have a link to your thread please?
