Girls Short List

Hi
Our baby girl is due in January, I really love the name Summer but feel a bit funny calling her Summer when she's born in January so this is our short list. Please could you help us decide and offer new suggestions if you can think of anything along the same lines:

Jessica
Amelia (I'm not sure but DH loves it)
Matilda
Harriet (Hattie)

The middle name would be Annie which I know doesn't really go with any of the above but it's my Grandmas name and would love to have it as middle name.

Jessica - Nice but very common, don't know if it bothers you. Pronounced 'Jessca' in some areas...

Amelia - Nice, I know one. Almost as common as Jessica, quite a range of possible nicknames.

Matilda - really reminds me of the book/film. I still consider it an old ladyish name although I think it's really rising in popularity. May be loads in a few years (notice it a lot on here too).

Harriet - Dislike, sorry! Sounds too much like Harry, and Hattie reminds me of the mad hatter.

Can I ask what your surname begins with?

I actually think that Annie goes quite well with your suggestions...

other ideas:
Genevieve Annie
Elizabeth Annie
Isabella Annie
Martha Annie
Madeline Annie
Victoria Annie
Alexandra Annie
Eleanor Annie
Lydia Annie
Beatrice Annie
Catherine Annie
Imogen Annie
Talia Annie

I like summer, but again Im having a winter baby, so seems a bit weird.

We might be havng Amelia as a middle name, Don't like it as a 1st name, but its in OH top three names, so I would allow it as a middle name.

Jessica- nice but has been very popular for years now. depends if you like Jess/Jessie as nicknames

Matilda-I know one who gets called Mattie

Harriet-My fave

Matilda is the best of your choices imo. I love Tilda as a nn.

Hulababy · 29/09/2010 19:54

Of the four OP names Matilda is my favourite. Very pretty, lovely.

I also really like Martha and Florence.

PaulineCampbellJones · 29/09/2010 19:56

Like Matilda best.

HerHonesty · 29/09/2010 20:22

i think they are lovely but if i had to choose i would elinate amelia on the basis of it being very used at the moment and jessica as it is a bit harsh sounding.

Hi Mentalfloss thank you for your lovely suggestions - I really like Victoria but not Vicky (it's my middle name too) and Isabella but unfortunately DH doesn't like it.

Skyrg thank you for your thoughts! Our surname begins with D and is double barrelled.

I'm going off Amelia all the time, it's a shame DH likes it so much! He wants to shorten it to Millie. My favourite still Hattie or Jessica...

Can I please suggest STRONGLY that you don't go for Matilda then. Poor thing's initials would be MAD!
Are you looking for something popular, or is it important that no one else shares the name? I think Jessica is very popular and there may be several in her class.

Lulabel27 · 01/10/2010 00:39

ha I hadn't actually thought of that! Thank you for pointing it out. I'm not too worried about there being several of the same name - I like the shortened versions of all of them so that would give a few options.

Forgot to mention Layla as well. I know this creates mixed feelings!

My favourite is Harriet. If I could, and if nature gave me another DD, that's a name I'd definitely consider if DP wasn't the MOST fussy name picker of all time.
