OH is polynesian/latin american, first name Arturo.

We want to give the baby a polynesian first name, but I want him to have an english middle name and we've been struggling to decide what.

I just thought of anglicising arturo to arthur...

but it's 4am here where I am, and I can't get my head around what that sounds like back in England, having been living in a spanish speaking country for almost 2 years.

Arthur. It's naff isn't it? Nice idea, but a bit old.

love it ... coming back in fashion

CuppaTeaJanice · 29/09/2010 08:59

Old man chic is quite popular at the moment - lots of Alfies, Charlies, Stans etc., but I much prefer Arturo, to be honest.

I'm not a big fan of naming boys after their dads, but you say it's just a middle name, so that will avoid the confusion with post etc.

What names are you thinking of for the first name?

islandbaby · 29/09/2010 09:06

The problem with Arturo is that in england, instead of the quite sexy way it sounds with a spanish accent (sort of arrrrturo), it becomes artooorow. Not so easy to explain in text...

Honu or Honuiti is our favourite for a first name at the moment, other options are Kaimoana (kai), Taumoana (tau), Manutea... none of which really go with arthur Confused

I think Arthur is dead cute!

girlafraid · 29/09/2010 10:52

Arthur is fantastic, if this one was a boy he would definitely have been Arthur!

Pasiphae · 29/09/2010 11:05

Great name, love the vintage/cheeky vibe!

SirBoobAlot · 29/09/2010 11:07

Arthur is fantastic.

Hi Islandbaby (waves from November ante-natal thread). Personally, I really like Arthur. It's the name of my husband's 5-year-old godson (in the US) and also friends of ours have just had a little boy and named him Arthur Edwin. But I wouldn't say it's a common name, and with middle names, I think you can just choose what you like. After all, how often do you have to reveal your middle name?

PosieParker · 29/09/2010 11:11

Love it.

meadowlarks · 29/09/2010 11:32

LOVE Arthur. My incredibly inspiring and hilarious history tutor was called Arthur, so it has great connotations for me.

takethatlady · 29/09/2010 12:25

LOVE LOVE LOVE. This is our 2nd choice, and it's only not our first choice because we're using my granddad's name. If I ever bloody well ovulate again and conceive Grin

allyfe · 29/09/2010 13:44

Arthur is very fashionable at the moment. Have to be honest, I HATE it. However, since half of the world love it, you'd be safe ignoring my personal vendetta agains the name.

Arturo on the other hand, I quite like.

TaudrieTattoo · 29/09/2010 13:49

Cool name.

Is my ds2's middle name.

Art for short.

What's not to like? Smile

5DollarShake · 29/09/2010 14:23

Arthur is fine. Coming back in.

Kaimoana means 'seafood' in Maori though. Hmm Kai = food. Moana = sea.

Maybe you know this already - just wanted to point it out! Grin

Ineedsomesleep · 29/09/2010 14:30

Really like Arthur, and have done for years. Would have loved to have called DS Arthur but it really doesn't go with our last name.

hatsybatsy · 29/09/2010 14:33

Arthur v sweet- only know one and he's scrummy - if there were ever a ds2, then Arthurs would definitely be i the running for his name....

islandbaby · 29/09/2010 17:03

What a positive response!

Yes, 5dollarshake quite true. OH is from easter island, and in the rapa nui language kai means both food and (albeit less commonly) the ocean, and moana means blue (of the ocean), so it's either blue food, or the blue ocean... either way it's an acceptable name!

There are so many beautiful girls names from the island, Mahina (moon), Merahi (angel) Tipanie (a flower), Hinavai (water goddess), but not so many boys names that I like. Often they're named after colours or animals (Honu is sea turtle, which is a bit of a weird thing to be named in english but a very important animal in polynesia).

Lesson over!

allyfe · 29/09/2010 22:06

DomesticG0ddess · 30/09/2010 13:57
