Hi mums! I am near to the end of my pregnancy and after many months I think I've found my ideal name. Isabella. What does this name make you think of?
Before I decide to go for it, I'd like to hear other people's opinions. Thank you!

it's a lovely name
but it's incredibly popular right now. there are hundreds of them round here

Skyrg · 27/09/2010 10:47

It's a lovely name, with some very nice nicknames.
As thisisyesterday says, it's very popular. I know several, and I believe both Isabella and Isabelle are high up the most popular names lists.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 27/09/2010 11:00

It's beautiful. People will tell you it's too popular (it is very popular) but if you love, use it.

It makes me think of a little girl who I love very, very much Smile

Oh, didn't realise it was so popular. Sounds perfect though - both in my my mother tongue (Italian) and in English.
What about Giulietta?

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 27/09/2010 11:04

i think the english may struggle with Giulietta, although it's a lovely name. Julietta is the more common spelling in the UK.

There are a lot of Isabellas, almost all of whim are known by some nickname or other (Izzy / bella / ella / Isa). Name her Isabella and call her Isabella.

Skyrg · 27/09/2010 11:12

I'm afraid I have no idea how to pronounce Giulietta (like Julietta?), and I struggle to spell it. Would cause difficulty, I think.

ValiumSingleton · 27/09/2010 11:20

Oh please use Giulietta instead. Personally I prefer 'just' Juliet, but Giulietta is gorgeous if you have an Italian connection.

I know a fair few Isabellas, and Giulietta sounds so refresshing and interesting in comparison.

I disagree with FerminaUrbinoDaza over the spelling though. I have no Italian connection whatsoever but I understand the rules of Italian spelling enough to know that Gi is like Gianni (as in Versace) and not Guh as in Gabanna Wink. So Giulietta makes sense. Julietta doesn't make sense to me. What strange amalgamation of rules and languages is that? That's what I would think. Total ringer.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I think ValiumSingleton you're right, Giulietta sounds very fresh and unusual. And yes, the pronunciation is the very same as in Julietta - actually, Giulietta is the name of the shakespearian character as we use it in Italian, i.e. a diminutive, old fashion form for Giulia.
Isabella is sort of rare in Italian, so I didn't expect it to be so popular in English, particurarly because it is not an english name in this form, with an -a at the end, isn't it?

Giulietta sounds familiar...

Giulietta is beautiful.

Isabella is so popular that it has ceased to be a name and is just a noise people make when talking about small girls.

musicmadness · 27/09/2010 15:58

I like the pronunciation of Giulietta if it is pronounced like Julietta, however I will admit I would have no idea how to spell it if you just told me the name. Isabella is a nice name, there aren't many of them around here.

5DollarShake · 27/09/2010 16:21

Isabella is a lovely name, but is almost the default baby girl's name these days. I say that as someone with a variation of the name myself.

I think it has a rather frumpy, middle-aged association in Italy. I remember reading that on here. Maybe that's why it's not so popular where you are. :)

NKffffffff975d2a31X127c4971dcd · 27/09/2010 17:41

I personally don't know any girl called Isabella, even in my first child's school here in London - you sure it is so so common? Anyway, no frumpy association with it in Italian. It is rather upper class old fashion there.
As HeadingHome says, I am sort of concerned about the association between Giulietta and the car, though...

I think it's more popular in America, and I think in the UK it's gaining popularity. Partly, I think, because of the girl in the Twilight books.

Thank you for the link, Skyrg!

Very very very common (as in popular not being snooty). Nice name but too many people seem to think so. The popularity would put me off but if it doesnt bother you go for it!

mathanxiety · 27/09/2010 19:54

If you lump together all the variations of Isobel/ Isabel/ Isabelle/ Isabella, you come up with a really, really popular name and probably a dozen in each playground. Then there are all the Ellas and you start to hear the same sound everywhere.

Giulietta is fabulous. I love Valentina too.

Rubena · 29/09/2010 08:08

It is lovely and was in our last 2. I don't like Izzy though. Went with Alexandra in the end and very happy with it x
