Just wondered what mumsnet think of that name Fiona? Now both me and dh love it but we are torn between Fiona and Miranda. My preference changes daily!

I knew an absolutely beautiful Fiona when I was growing up. She was one of the loveliest girls I have ever seen, and it has really positive associations for me.

Others may say it's a bit dated, but I really like it.

fizzpops · 25/09/2010 10:42

Dated for me - I know two FIonas both in late 30s -early 40s.

Miranda is beautiful though.

piscesmoon · 25/09/2010 10:46

I think that Fiona is a classic. It isn't madly popular, but it doesn't date-I know a few of all ages.

kiwidreamer · 25/09/2010 18:40

Fee / Fi is a cute nickname too.

eaglewings · 25/09/2010 18:43

I agree, Fiona is a classic :)

A1980 · 25/09/2010 18:53

Dated and for me horrendous. Reminds me of my horrid cruel boss in my first job.

How about Ffion?

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 25/09/2010 18:54

I think it's lovely. Not dated, but a classic IMO.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/09/2010 18:59

It is a tiny bit dated - but I think it's one of those names that if you knew a little one, it'd grow on you and you'd realise it's a pretty name. One of DD's classmates has a little sister called Daphne, and that has a similar feel for me - bit odd at first, but now it's just this little girl's name.

frakkinnakkered · 25/09/2010 19:01

I don't think it's dated. I know Fionas of almost every age.

Beautiful name, as is Ffion.

ChooksAway · 25/09/2010 19:25

I like Fiona.
I can't stand Miranda though - sorry! (It's one of those names that's coming back, and I just don't get it!)

worldgonemad72 · 25/09/2010 21:44

I really like the name fiona, i agree with most of the others, its more classic than dated.
Not keen on miranda though.

4sophia · 25/09/2010 22:42

Dated, awful name!

BelligerentGhoul · 25/09/2010 22:44

Not fond.

Miranda is gorgeous - we wanted it for dd1 but it sounded silly with dp's surname.

stressheaderic · 25/09/2010 22:47

I know a Miranda who gets called Rand quite a lot. This would put me off.

Love Fiona, very classic. Similar vein to Diana although that name kind of got killed off

Bunbaker · 25/09/2010 22:50

I like both names. I don't think Fiona is dated at all - I know an eight year old called Fiona. I think it is a popular Irish name.

SirBoobAlot · 26/09/2010 09:46

Like them both, Miranda is my favorite.

ivykaty44 · 26/09/2010 09:53

Fiona is a lovely name

Miranda reiminds me of an american sitcom, nto sure why?

CornflowerB · 26/09/2010 09:54

Don't forget the princess in Shrek is called Fiona and she is a green ogre, well some of the time anyway.

Aitch · 26/09/2010 09:54

i have never met a nice fiona.

ninedragons · 26/09/2010 09:57

Really? I've never met a horrible one!

Aitch · 26/09/2010 10:01

i'm in scotland, are you here too? loads of fionas, all of them lumpen and ill-natured. it's the law.

ValiumSingleton · 26/09/2010 10:30

It's dated but that's not necessarily bad. I'm in Ireland and I also know lots of them, all between 35 and 45!

But I can see that it is still a pretty sound, and very unusual now. I think Iona has replaced fiona for people who like that sound/want a celtic-ish choice! I like Shona more than Fiona, but if you like Fiona then I think it's a good choice. It's familiar and people know how to spell it, but your child would be the only one.

ValiumSingleton · 26/09/2010 10:32

ps, I agree with chooksaway, Miranda is awful sorry. Miriam is much better, or if you like names that end in 'da' what about Belinda or Zelda. Everything better than Miranda. She sounds such a simpering fanny, Miraaaaaahnda. [twirls hair] [Giggles] [simpers]

(yes, I admit it, I did know one)

wahwah · 26/09/2010 11:32

Fiona is lovely as was my best friend of my childhood (Fifi). Ffion only if you're Welsh IMO.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/09/2010 11:34

I love Fiona. I know someone in their mid 20s called Fiona and we do sometimes call her Princess Fiona a la Shrek but in an affectionate way. Very pretty name I think.
