Finn - popular?

Bradyboo · 23/09/2010 21:23

DH loves Finn and I'm not sure as think it's really popular and DS would always be one of many at school.

Am I right and what do you reckon?

I love Jasper, Oscar and Miles still - Ahhhhhhhhh!

Disgustingly popular.

Oscar is too.

Jasper and Miles less so but still v identifiable as noughties babies.

cece · 23/09/2010 21:28

Every other baby is called Finley or a variation of here...

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:30

There's only one Finn in the local school.

I think 'disgustingly popular' is a very strange thing to say.

BunnyLebowski · 23/09/2010 21:30

Objectionably popular and particularly annoying to me as an Irish woman.

I have even met a Finnley ('just to be different')

Jojay · 23/09/2010 21:33

I know a few - admittedly a Fynn and a Finley.

Jasper is a brilliant name though (biased Grin)

ja9 · 23/09/2010 21:34

it depends where you are...... i'm in central scotland and whilst i have come across 'finns', i don't actually know any (although know a couple of finlays)

I LOVE it - it was our name for dd had she been a boy...

Dione · 23/09/2010 21:35

In Ireland Finn is an abbreviated version of Finbar (sometimes also abb. to Barry). It's up to you, but I love Oscar.

ja9 · 23/09/2010 21:36

fwiw you just cant predict what names are going to be in his class. i loved the name heidi which is extremely uncommon around here, yet dd has a heidi in her new school nursery group ( and so i guess will have in her year group, if not class, the whole way through school...)

CupcakesHay · 23/09/2010 21:37

Oscar is very popular... only know 2 finns at a school of about 250 primary kids... (half are girls though!)

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:40

ShowofHands, just nosed at your pics (cute baby!). There are 2 Matildas in my DD's class so you have chosen a very popular name too!

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 21:44

I didn't say that popular was bad. Popular names are popular for a reason. I didn't give a flying fig about popularity and/or other people's opinions when naming dd. I picked the name as a child.

The OP was concerned about popularity and as others have attested that depending on where you live, every other baby might be a Finn (I know 2 Finlays, a Finbar, 2 Finegans a Finn and a Fin).

avaj · 23/09/2010 21:47

There are 3 Matildas at my toddler group!

Anyway, I like Finn, and only know of one, who is 5, and his actual name is Fintan (Irish)

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 21:50

DD isn't a Matilda btw.

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:51

'Disgustingly popular' would suggest that you think popular is a bad thing would it not?

That's not the issue though, as the OP was indeed asking if it is popular. I found your post to be aggressive (along with some posts this evening) and felt it unecessary.

BonniePrinceBilly · 23/09/2010 21:52

Its not just Finbar in Ireland, I should know, I have a Finian! And there are a lot of baby Finn's here, not many older ones though.

mummynoseynora · 23/09/2010 21:52

I have to say my BiL just had a baby called Finn and its very cute... although I had an Oscar in january - so I prefer that!

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:53

Every other photo of you child had 'Mathida' written next to it.

Lovely name, but very popular ;)

WinkyWinkola · 23/09/2010 21:53

Very popular. Ds1 has 3 Finns in his year.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 21:54

Disgustingly popular was an affectation. I just meant popular. Nowt wrong with Finn. I really like it. Is a fine name. I may have said ridiculously popular or alarmingly popular. I still would have meant the same thing.

EightiesChick · 23/09/2010 21:54

3 Finns in the 1-2 age group at my DS's nursery.

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:55

My DD has a poular name. She is the only one in her class though!

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 21:55

There are 17 pictures on my profile, 3 have 'Mathilda' written next to them. You will note that they were baby pictures. That was her given name on her birth certificate for very good reasons. It is not the name she is known by or has been known by for the last 3 and a half years.

NormanNorris · 23/09/2010 21:57

Ah that's a shame. I love Mathilda and wanted it for DD. Such a strong name.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 21:58

Means mighty in battle. It's a brilliant name.

Bradyboo · 23/09/2010 22:09

DH is Irish (although now live in South West London) so would be looking for an Irish variation of it but know that it would become Finn which is why I am wondered how popular it is.
