Hi,

Just wondering if you have an Edward in your family, do they go by the full name or a nn?

Thanks !

Yes, lots in our family, tis used for all eldest sons.....it can be very confusing. DH is Edward mostly, DS has it as is second name so we don't use it, and FIL was Ted....

If I were going to use a shortened version I would prefer Ed.

Ds2 is Edward, and he's nearly 2.

He's rarely Edward, mostly Ed or sometimes Eddie.

I did hear a woman at school once having a moan because another child called across the playground to her son, 'Eddie!' She shouted back, 'It's Edward, not Eddie!' and said to me that she hated it when her son got called Eddie or Ed.

I think it's a little unrealistic to assume it will never be shortened. As the child gets older they will decide which version they prefer and it might well be teh short version.

It's a great name though!

DH is Edward - he is always Edward to his family, but to everyone else he tends to be Ed. I alternate between the two.

It's one of those names that people always want to shorten, so if you're very anti-nickname, you're in for future frustration.

But I agree with Jojay, it's a fabulous name!

My father and grandfather were both Edward. My father actually went by his middle name and only my mother would occasionally call him Ed or Eddie. My grandfather was known as Ed or Eddie his whole life.

If we call our son Edward I think I like the nn Teddy for when he is young and then Ed for when he is older.

I think "Bear" is also a nickname....unless I am completely offbase Confused

DS is Edward although normally shortened to Ed or Tedward Bear (by me!!), never Eddie by Friends and family. However he has just started secondary school and at recent meeting with his new form tutor was told that Eddy was settling in very well! When I questioned why he was being called Eddy when on the registration form I had stated Ed or Edward, I was told that DS had told everyone that he would like to be called Eddy from now on ! Smile

Thanks everyone- I really love Edward it is the nicknames that I am not too sure about.

We have a very short surname so Ed + SN sort of rolls into one word. I really don't like Eddie but like Ted/Teddy/ Ned.

Our other name is Elliot so it will probably be an E name one way or the other.

tadjennyp · 24/09/2010 04:45

My ds(3) is Edward and his sister calls him Ed and I often call him Woody. He always says his name is Edward but will answer to anything!

BrokenRing · 24/09/2010 12:45

We've an Edward. Always called him Edward. Hated all the nicknames and when folk called him Ted, Eddy and the others of their own accord, we told them not to.
Now he's in teens, some mates call him Ed - I can cope with that but wouldn't call him it myself.

He sometimes gets Eduardo but only as a joke.
