Lauren or Seren

My hubbie prefers Seren, my parents prefer Lauren.

We had decided on Seren, but unbeknown to my hubbie I have told my parents, and they are not so keen. When I have gone through our other thoughts, they liked Lauren.

We all quite like Faye, but don't think it goes so well with our harsh sounding surname.

They are relieved it is not an old lady's name, as they strongly dislike old lady's name (my cousins have gone for old lady's names).

I think they could get used to Seren. It doesnt get too strong a reaction.

Errr.

We have agreed on no names more than two syllables.

What do you think?

I have a Lauren and a Serena

Seren is a lovely name. but then so is lauren.

ShatnersBassoon · 17/09/2010 14:09

Go with what you like. Why should your parents have a say? You don't want to call her Lauren to suit your parents and then spend forever thinking 'Why didn't we go with what we really liked?'.

Greensleeves · 17/09/2010 14:11

I like Seren

and I think your dh's view is much more important than your parents'

which do you prefer?

Kathleen123 · 17/09/2010 14:16

Well it's their first grandchild, and I want them to like the name.

It wasnt a very strong dislike reaction, I think it is just that they have not heard of the name Seren before.

They admitted it went well with our surname. Although Lauren goes just as well

I think we'll probably stick with our name, which is Seren Laura. (hubbie doesnt know that my parents know the name).

Greensleeves - I prefer Seren.

Just a small name wobble.

Thanks everyone.

Seren is nicer, Lauren is a bit more boring but Seren is very pretty. I don't think your parents should have a bigger say as compared to what you and your dh like. As you said they did not even dislike it that much, they will get used to it

LaTristesse · 18/09/2010 08:23

I like Seren best, although Lauren is nice.

I knew my parents would hate DS's name (also 1st grandchild) which is why I didn't tell them until he was born. IME they're so stoked with the baby they don't really give the name much thought. And anyway after a few days the baby kind of 'becomes' the name anyway - I say go with the one you like best!

Fontella · 18/09/2010 08:36

I am a graphic designer and my business name is Seren - it's the Welsh word for 'Star' - but then you already know that I'm sure.

I like both names.

sedgiebaby · 18/09/2010 08:40

Both are nice, Seren would be on my shortlist if DH didn't veto...Séren is also in my french babies book and means Serene so a nice meaning there too.

cece · 18/09/2010 08:50

How do you say Seren?
I've never met one so would be a bit puzzled on how to say it.

I am thinking

Se wren? Am I right?

Rach109 · 18/09/2010 20:12

Its a welsh name meaning "star"

Seh - ren

I like both names

whatever you choose the parents / in laws would get used to it / grow to like it anyway !

jem44 · 18/09/2010 20:24

Yes, emphasis on first syllable as Rach says. In Welsh it would have a little roof over the first e to elongate and flatten the sound further - sounds a bit like "sare-ren" (with a little roll of the r if you want to be really authentic).

I think it is more unusual and therefore to be preferred over Lauren which is lovely but - deservedly - popular.

Only trouble is people can confuse it with Serene or Serena which looks similar but is pronounced very differently. This won't happen if you live in Wales of course...

LadySanders · 18/09/2010 20:29

seren is a beautiful name, i've never heard it before (though i do have a cat called soren)

CommonSenseSuze · 18/09/2010 20:32

I don't like Seren, as I grew up in Wales and it's quite a common name for pets. I knew a couple of dogs and several ponies called Seren.

Lauren's my favourite girls name though!

pranma · 18/09/2010 20:56

Please not Lauren I have waded through so many exam papers with that name on the top.Seren is beautiful and Welsh for star it also sounds good with faye as a middle name.

Ephiny · 19/09/2010 15:03

Both are nice, but I prefer Seren, it's a beautiful name.

I agree go with what you and your DH like, your parents will get used to it - from what you say it sounds like they were just a little surprised by the choice, not that they violently hated it!

Those are both lovely names. As you like Faye, what about Feya/Faya...perhaps it goes better with your surname?

Kathleen123 · 20/09/2010 15:52

Hi all

Thanks for the comments.

Hubbie is Welsh and we live in Wales. Yes, its pronounced seh-ren.

My parents are English, but live 3 miles from the border of Wales, and have lots of Welsh links. My fathers dad (my Taid) is welsh.

I love Seren Faye together too.

Thanks again.

Kate
