A little help would be appreciated - what do you think of the name Digby for our possible DS1 (4 weeks to go)? Our surname begins with D as well - not sure if DMPD would work as initials.

My preferred alternatives would be Frederick (Freddie) or Benedict (Dickie) which I like because you can shorten them, but no such convenience with Digby - unless it is to 'Dig' which i don't like........

Help!!!

I love it and a friend has just given it as a middle name to her DS (she wanted it as first name but her DH wouldn't agree).

seeker · 14/09/2010 14:36

Digby - Jones. Or a big dog.

Just to warn you -(although after a mammoth thread about something similar, I do hope you're not offended) - my 9 year old ds would find the thought of someone being called Dickie hysterically funny. It does seem that he ithe only mumsnetter's child with such a prurient sense of humour though!

fruitshootsandheaves · 14/09/2010 14:37

I just think of the biggest old english sheepdog in the world ...sorry

catinthehat2 · 14/09/2010 14:38

IT's a bit try hard.

Digby, brother to Hamish and Arabella.

Fimbo · 14/09/2010 14:39

Sorry but it's dreadful. Fine for a dog though.

Hulababy · 14/09/2010 14:55

I amnot keen, ssorry.

I prefer fred/freddie

ShatnersBassoon · 14/09/2010 14:56

Great big dog, nothing else.

NoMilkToday · 14/09/2010 14:57

I love the name Digby :)

Agree with seeker re. Dickie - my three would find this funny too.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 14/09/2010 14:57

Not my taste,
I like both Frederick and Benedict, but I would never shorten to Dickie, surely you would choose to shorten to Ben

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/09/2010 14:59

I can't stop thinking about 'Sir Digby Chicken Caesar' but I am an idiot.

I can't remember what the blokes are called - it's a comedy sketch.

'Tis making me laugh though - hell knows I need a chuckle.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/09/2010 15:00

On a more useful note, Benedict is delicious! :)

Oh yes I had forgotten about Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

think it was Mitchell and Webb

Dotty38 · 14/09/2010 15:03

I don't like it. There used to be a Digby College around here so it would have those associations to me. I like Frederick and Ben, not Benedict though.

BTino · 14/09/2010 15:03

If you call your son Dickie then you may have to pay for him to go privately.

Benedict is lovely, as is Ben. Sounds studious and handsome.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/09/2010 15:03

That's it! :o

ozmetric · 14/09/2010 15:24

Frederick/Freddie is my favourite from your list.

Benedict is OK, not sure about Dickie though, prefer Ben as a nickname.

I don't like Digby at all, sorry. Also the initials DMPD might get "dumped" jokes.

FrenchLimeBlossom · 14/09/2010 15:31

Ah wow - thanks everyone!

Not remotely offended by contra views, each to their own. To be honest we are a bit of a Boden-wearing, Guardian-reading, Waitrose-shopping family anyway so middle-class connotations do not scare us at all Wink

I think some of you are thinking of Digby the biggest dog in the world Smile - well that's not a bad association to make.

I must say I hate Benedict being shortened to Ben (although if it is a boy, and he prefers Ben to Dickie once he is old enough to choose then it's his choice I guess!). I love the name Dickie and am not put off by the thought of anyone sniggering, I never have and I know about 4 of them!

Benedict is a fantastic name.

blinder · 14/09/2010 15:37

We have a Digby in our family (man in his fifties). Sill means a dog to me

LetThereBeRock · 14/09/2010 15:58

Hideous.

cartoon dog was my first impression.

Judging by the other dog posts, we are all of the same opinion.

Emo76 · 14/09/2010 16:57

Would not encourage the shortening of Benedict to Dickie...your son will NOT thank you!
