All the names i seem to like sound 'wrong', when added to surname

do you think a long 3/4 syllable or a short name goes better??

its greek also, surname kind of sounds like: lantochtarentis...< see the problem!

I have a 4 syllable surname, DS's (first names) are 2 and 3 syllables long.

However - including their middle name they are 10, 7 and 8 syllables long

Not really seeing the problem - Greek names seem to 'flow' and be quite easy to say.
Most people will say go for a short first name though.

I know a 5-syllabled Greek named person - whose first name is Angela. It has never struck me as inelegant. So needn't be short.

IMO a 2-syllable first name goes best with a long surname. A long first name would make the whole thing too much of a mouthful, while a 1-syllable first name with a long surname can sound a little unbalanced.

Best also to have a first name that is relatively well known and easy to spell, if the surname is long and unusual.

I think up to 2 syllables is best with a long surname.

ozmetric · 14/09/2010 15:14

2-3 syllables would sound good.

there are 'rules' I think, for balance. So 1 or 3 syllables to go with 5.

One syllable - Rose, Grace, Tom spring to mind.

I say stick to Greek-ish names if there's a Greek surname, and let the syllables sort themselves out.

Two of my DDs have 7 syllables in all, with 3 being the surname, 4 for the first names, and they sound fine to my ear, mostly due to certain vowel sounds being echoed in both names and surname.

My. Maiden name was Greek with3 syllables I have a 2 syllable name and my sisters have 3 syllables. All anglicized versions of Greek names they all go well together. There is a 3 syllable version of name which sounds better
