How would you pronounce it? Like "sari" (ie: the dress Indian women wear)? Or "seer-ee" (ie: a nn version of Sarah)? Or "sa-rye", like the name Sarah in the bible had before Gd named her Sarah? I prefer the third option.

AuntGertrude · 13/09/2010 14:40

I go with Sarai (which is the spelling of Abraham's wife's name before it was changed to Sarah - he was Abram, she was Sarai) - and pronounce it Sa-rye.

Syrie is also a nice name (pronounced Si-ree, with a short 'i'). Somerset Maugham's wife who was a famous interior designer had it as her nickname (for Sarah Louise) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrie_Maugham.

Pronounced like sari (Indian-stylee!) - it's from an old song called Sarie Marais...

I prefer Sarai. Lovely name.

Sari sounds a bit odd but that is because I think of it as the clothing item!

ozmetric · 13/09/2010 15:01

I like Sarai too.

WetAugust · 13/09/2010 16:06

Yuk - horrible name. It sounds like a piece of clothing

ozmetric · 13/09/2010 16:12

Sara, Sarah, Serena and Zara are also nice IMO.

Kwini · 13/09/2010 16:59

Syrie is pretty, too... thanks for the suggestion, Aunt G!

Sarai is too biblical, I'm afraid. And Sara(h)/Zara, etc. too common.

WetAugust, did you have to be quite so rude?

I had an aunt Sarie, very Afrikaans name in South Africa, I've never met an English one.

catinthehat2 · 13/09/2010 17:03

Sarie seems to be the hardest word..

mathanxiety · 13/09/2010 17:24
