My new niece's name. It has family connections. Just curious as to others' opinion. And what would be your favorite nickname for it? Kate, Katie, Kathy, Kat? Thanks.

I love it. Think it's very classic and pretty.

Love Kate and Kitty as a nickname.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 08/09/2010 13:51

Kate, as a nn, is lovely and timeless.

Just13moreyearstogo · 08/09/2010 13:51

My mum's name. She always wanted Kate and now she's in her 70s she has some old college friends who've started calling her that to please her! She generally gets Kath or Kathy. If my dad calls her Kathleen you know he's about to have a go about something!

wonka · 08/09/2010 13:59

I like Kathleen shortened to Lena. (My aunts name)

allinaspin · 08/09/2010 13:59

I like Kathleen - it sounds musical, classical and elegant.

Kate and Katie are great nns too.

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 08/09/2010 14:07

Middle aged and frumpy....Katharine or Catherine are much nicer in my opinion.

My cousin is kathleen, shortened to Kathy.....no-one ever calls her Kathleen.

OliviaMumsnet · 08/09/2010 14:09

My granny was Kathleen but she was called Molly.

perfumedlife · 08/09/2010 15:26

Love Kathleed, its classless. Kate is great, Kitty too.

cloudydays · 08/09/2010 15:31

Thanks all! I think I really like it. My first thought would have been "why not Catherine?" too, but then again I think that Catherine's a much more common (as in frequently used) name these days, so Kathleen has the advantage of being slightly unusual but still familiar, if that makes sense. Also the family is Irish and Kathleen is the Irish version, so it fits in that sense.

Don't know what they'll / we'll call her day-to-day, but I think Kathy sounds kind of sweet on a little girl, and again much less frequently used than Kate or Katie, both of which are also lovely. Would never have thought of Lena... or Molly!

ozmetric · 08/09/2010 17:49

Lovely :)

Favourite nickname would be Kath or Katie.

mathanxiety · 08/09/2010 18:07

I love Kathleen; it's so much nicer than Caitlyn/Kaitlin, etc.

I know a teenage Kat, and I like Kate too.

Tippychoocks · 08/09/2010 18:09

Love Kathleen. Less so Kath but like Kitty and Kate.

My Nana's name. Always known as Kathleen or Aunt Ka. If DS had been a girl he would have been Laura Kathleen.

I have to say I am not keen on it. (Sorry Nana!). I don't like how it looks.

lumplard · 08/09/2010 20:54

Beautiful beautiful. I love Kathleen

WoodyAllen · 08/09/2010 20:57

My great aunt Kathleen was Kit or Kitty. I think it's timeless and sassy. Great. Kate always good too. Always.

Rockbird · 08/09/2010 21:09

Lovely, my mum's name, known as Kathy.

Concordia · 08/09/2010 21:13

I'm so sorry but I don't like it.

My friend refused to call her daughter that (after her MIL) because she said it sounded common.

I also might be biased for the wrong reasons. A girl at my primary school had a mum named Kathleen. She was loud, brash, chain smoker, very overweight.... Whenever I hear that name I think of her.
