Need to register DD's birth before the end of this week and we have completely run out of inspiration to find a middle name for her. Her name is Florence, but is called Florrie for now.
Please help! Nothing too twee, and not Rose for the obvious reasons!

I know upahill, but would feel pretty poor in a few years if Florrie tells her mates "nah, don't have a middle name, mum and dad were too tired to think of one....!"

BiggestI know loads of people that haven't got a middle name including my brothers.

Surely better no name rather than a 'make do ' name because let's face it nothing is sprining to mind and you're clutching at straws trying to think of something.

It's nice for a middle name to mean something to you I think. It's a chance to give your DD a name which you wouldn't dare use as a first name, but love. Or to honour someone or something. And it's good to have a middle name, I would worry that if I didn't give my DS middle names they'd feel left out, or like I couldn't be bothered.

I did a quick search on your posts (too much time on my hands tonight! DP working at a late gig and DS asleep) and I discovered you are a lefty (yay!) who's got a daughter with the same name as the new tory baby (it's still a nice name though!) you're Irish and like Prince.

So how about ...

OK then, firstly how about a name that sort of balances out the tory association of Florence?

Florence Bevan (After Nye Bevan - my DP knows a female Bevan)
Florence Mo (as in Mowlem, a personal favourite of mine Smile)
Florence Emily or Florence Emmeline (after Emily Pankhurst)

Or perhaps simply a name that means red? According to this site at any rate, all these names mean red:

Florence Scarlett
Florence Fenella
Florence Delila (I thought that had "h" at the end?)
Florence Mackenzie (unisex, apparently)
Florence Cassie
Florence Merrie
Florence Rowena

Wow, there are a lot of these "red" names. I'm going to post this before my computer eats it, and come back to this ...

lowrib · 10/09/2010 23:51

Florence Emmeline, Florence Bevan and Florence Scarlett are my favourites so far ...

lowrib · 11/09/2010 00:02

More names which mean red

Florence Delilah (with h)
Florence Mirabella
Florence Merrilee
Florence Loralee
Florence Devinee (Irish)
Florence Anushka

lowrib · 11/09/2010 00:21

Or how about an Irish name, perhaps ...

Florence Fionnoula
Florence Siobhan
Florence Catriona
Florence Adara
Florence Ciara

How much do you like Prince? Princes sister is called Tika according to Wikipedia.

Or you could always simply give her an unpronounceable symbol as a middle name, problem solved Grin

I like this game (can you tell?!) but I really must go to bed!

I'm not sure how much I trust that site with the red names. If you go that route, I'd look them up somewhere else too to be sure!

lowrib · 11/09/2010 10:13

Oh sugar, I notice now you had to register her by the end of the week, is it too late now? What did you go fore in the end?

biggest · 11/09/2010 22:11

Hi lowrib - not too late, we have until Monday at 9.30am! It's quite interesting the picture that can be painted of someone by going through old posts - the Prince thing is funny, I love his music but not enough to influence DC names! What was that post?
Thanks for all the ideas though, you are right to say it needs to mean something.
I agree with you about Mo by the way, I worked with her and she was one in a million!

I'm pretty sure it came from a thread where you were replying to someone who was worried about going to a gig while pregnant.

You're not going to go for the symbol option then? Shame Wink

How you doing on the name front? Have you got one or are you still struggling?

oltob · 17/09/2010 14:34

What did you go for biggest?
I'm only just back on here and missed Elsa. Very very lovely, the E names sound good with Florence. I will be filing Bevan away for a dd2 or ds.

TheBeast · 17/09/2010 14:40

Don't do it.

I don't have a middle name but my children all have. There names were made up as follows: [Name my wife and I liked][Familyish Name][My Wife's Surname] and they all use my surname.

Form filling has been hell with all those names. Form filling with my names is easy. Go for simplicity. One name and a surname...

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 17/09/2010 14:45

Florence Elsa is lovely, as is Florence Matilda.
What about Florence Isabel or Esma?

In Scottish it is quite normal to give a child it's mother maiden name as a middle name. Would this work?
