Third middle name for Margot Viola?

Marquez · 05/09/2010 10:03

Genevieve
Caroline
Hermione
Clementine

which of these is your favourite? I love them all but can't seem to decide. Does anyone have any other ideas? We can't have anything ending in -a or -o. We want something strong and classic that has been used as a name for quite a long time. Genevieve is exactly right but unfortunately has some negative connotations for me. Caroline and Hermione I love but am a bit worried about having three names with an 'o' sound. Also love Clementine but worry that it is too frilly after Viola, want something strong and classic.

Dh has already vetoed Emmeline and don't feel we can have Guinevere as we already have an Arthur.

Sorry, that should be "that has been used as a name in England for quite a long time".

Blythe
Susanne
Isolde
Clemence

I love all your the suggested names (especially Caroline and Hermione).

I really dislike Margot (Mar-gott?), it sounds quite harsh in comparison.

Marquez · 05/09/2010 11:56

Wow thanks for the suggestions, I especially like Isolde and Mathilde.

Margot is pronounced MAR- GO (the t is is silent!)

I would stick with just the one tbh.

shoobidoo · 05/09/2010 15:01

Margot is only pronounced Mar-go in French. It is Mar-gott in German and Dutch.

So, I'm not sure why it would necessarily be pronounced the French way in English. Of course you can insist on that pronounciation, but beware that some might pronounce it differently.

How about spelling it Margaux - that would make the pronounciation clearer.

Marquez · 05/09/2010 16:41

Not too sure about margaux- to me that is a slightly different pronunciation. marg-aue as opposed to mar-go.

Traditional in dh's family to have 2 middle names

*mar-gaue

We had Margot Celeste on our list. Margot is fab. Think I like Genevieve best.

MentalFloss · 05/09/2010 17:43

I thought Margot was just pronounced Mar - go, I don't think its that ambiguous.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 05/09/2010 17:46

Margot is an awesome name. If I have DD she will be Margot - I think a one syllable third name would be best

Kitty81 · 05/09/2010 18:32

I agree about a one syllable third name...

Margot Viola Rose

Margot Viola Jane

Margot Viola Leigh

Hope you find it! Margot is lovely :)

monkeysmum79 · 06/09/2010 15:47

What about... Iris. Smile

champagnesupernova · 06/09/2010 15:52

I have only skim-read but I know a Lara Violet Grace which sounds similar - I think kitty91 said that one syllable is better and tbh I agree.
HTH

PuppyMonkey · 06/09/2010 15:54

Why does anyone need THREE names??? Confused

GladioliBuckets · 06/09/2010 18:18

For rhythm's sake, I say go for two syllables with the 2nd one stressed eg

Margot Viola Mathilde
Margot Viola Celeste

Is it Vee-ohla or V-eye-uh-la in your case?

Tortington · 06/09/2010 18:20

dude, just pretentious in the extreme - i hope your proper posh or your kids gonna get it at school

Mum1369 · 06/09/2010 18:22

Custardo - can't believe it took this long for someone to say that ?!

Marquez · 06/09/2010 20:01

It's viy-oh-lah.

Custardo- pretentious name in itself or having 3 names? It's traditional in dh's family to have 3 middle names and plenty of my friends do too, don't see it as pretentious at all personally although obviously others may disagree.

OP - are you a Chalet School Fan? I remember a Margot and a Viola being characters..

Marquez · 06/09/2010 20:06

Haven't heard of chalet school! Books? May have to research on amazon.

I've got a Margot

And no-one has ever mispronounced it

(misspelt it, yes, frequently!)

RabbitAndCo · 06/09/2010 20:10

You are French, aren't you?

sophiesmummie · 06/09/2010 20:43

I have a German aunt called Margot and she definately pronounces it Mar-got.

I can see it pronounced Mar-gau in French, but would not necessarily pronounce it that way in English, just like I would say 'forgot' and not 'forgo', if that makes sense.

However, if I was told you'd want it pronounced without the t, then of course I'd try to remember.
