Harvey?

I have a list as long as my arm for potential girls names but why is it so difficult to settle on a boy's name?

I am really struggling but feel very fond of the name Harvey. I think he sounds lovable and mischievous... but I'd like some second opinions too.

Thanks

As soon as I hear it I think of Jordan.

Therefore, it's a big fat "NO!" from me on Harvey.

What about Harry?

Harry is a much nicer name and not that far away from Harvey?

lumplard · 03/09/2010 21:34

Oh bloody hell yeah. I'd not thought of that :( That is why this place is important!

But I'll have to have a girl... there are no boys names I like!

Harry does have a similar appeal but I ruled it out as I think there are a lot of Harrys at the mo.

None? Are there any that are ok, slightly nice or fair to middling?

Might point us in the direction of what would work for you?

BrigitteBardot · 03/09/2010 21:35

I don't like Harvey, sorry.

UnholyMoley · 03/09/2010 21:35

Makes me think of an oversized invisible rabbit.

Harrison?

lumplard · 03/09/2010 21:40

Oops sorry posted twice. Unholey... oversized rabbit doesn't bother me at all, glamour model tacky does Blush

The problem is we just can't agree on names and are coming up with probably stupid reasons- eg. "I knew A Reuben once.. terrible hair" that kind of thing. DP is more guilty of this than me.

The names that are close but not quite gelling are:

Fred
James
Rowan

... Fred might be ok though.

Not keen on surnames as first names I'm afraid. How about Harry, Sam, Jack, Freddie, Alfie, Charlie (with longer full names on the BC)?

Quenbioz · 03/09/2010 21:41

Henry with Harry for short :)

NomDePlume · 03/09/2010 21:44

don't like harvey

Like James, like Rowan. Am meh wrt Fred

saltyseadog · 03/09/2010 21:45

Not keen on Harvey either - sorry.

Henry is a good suggestion :)

spiderlight · 03/09/2010 21:45

I like it. DS has a friend called Harvey at nursery who is a gorgeous, cute, cheeky little chappie and suits his name down to the ground.

Much prefer Rowan though!

pinkthechaffinch · 03/09/2010 21:45

first thought is of sofa company.

inoffensive tho really.

I think the reason why I really love Harvey... in fact I know this is the reason, is because when I first met DP we were both quite young and DP had no experience of hanging around with small children. My little brother was only 2 at the time and talked a lot about his friend "Harvey" in nursery. They were really naughty together but my little brother was hilarious when he recounted their escapades. I loved him talking to DP about it because I could see DP was slowly getting over his fear of small children and finding it all really sweet and charming. 13 years later DP still thinks of it fondly and wonders how that particular Harvey is getting on (we never met Harvey and my brother didn't see him after nursery!)

So it is a solid reason for being fond of the name but I'm still worried about the associations. Just mentioned to DP the Jordan connection... he is not in the slightest bit bothered. Confused

I liked Harvey whilst pregnant... Gone off it now, thankfully my cousin used it for her son, and I used Bryn instead Grin

How about Henry? I like James and Rowan from your other suggestions - Fred always feels blunt and unfinished to me.

EffieB · 04/09/2010 23:54

Harry and Henry sooooo common (as in regularly used) now though. I wouldn't have been sure about Harvey before, but in the last few months someone I know has called their little boy this, and actually I think it's a nice name- recognisable, spellable and not very common.

diddl · 05/09/2010 13:49

I really like it.

I also like Rory, Rufus, Silas & Jethro though, so what do I know?

Adair · 09/09/2010 11:25

I like Harvey too. It's ds's middle name because it's a passed-down family name. Named after this relative of dh. So quite posh really.

Mind you, I don't really care anyway if ds is thought of as 'chavvy' - his first name is apparently chavvy too Grin
