What is wrong with Jessica?

Everyone we have told we are thinking of naming our child Jessica has responded with 'oh'. Nobody seems to like it except us!

I like it :)

I like it as long as it is Jessica. Can't bear Jessie though. Don't mind Jess though.

And the morale of the tale is not to tell a soul your name choice for future children.

It's a lovely name. Jess is fab too!

I think of it as a sort of Barbie name, sorry.

It was massively over used in the mid to late 80s and is just very girly but not pretty. Just boring and a bit too frilly and sickly. It makes me feel a bit queasy when I say it, sort of like eating a bit too much cheesecake.

just thought why it makes me feel queasy, it has the sound 'sick' in it- jeSICKa. Could just be my subconcious making me feel ill. Don't like it at all.

well she has a lot of tantrums and likes her own way.

She is my GD, and I like it.

Never ever tell anyone in real life about your name plans. You will nearly always get "oh".

i hear frank spencers voice whenever i hear the name - but i am quite old and the children your dd's age won't know who frank spencer is

Perhaps they remember 'Some mothers do 'ave 'em' and Frank Spencer. His daughter and mother were called Jessica. He was often seen recounting a non sensical piece of wisdom that his mother had told him to baby Jessica. He was very sweet to her though. He is seen here singing her a lullaby.

Jessica Mitford, Jessica Alba, Jessica Rabbit, Jessica Rothchild, Jessica in The Merchant of Venice, as Shylock's daughter and the assistant from The Real Hustle had/have the name too.

And so do I.

I love it, but then as a child of the 80's it is both my middle name and that of my nan who died while mum was pregnant with me.

I once read on MN it was the female version of Thomas..but it can't be because Thomas has always been around, whereas Jessica shot out of nowhere in the '80's.

Jessica is a lovely name, and I agree with the other posters, who say don't reveal the name until baby is born!

It's a lovely name but very popular and has been for a while now so maybe their lack of enthusiasm is due to this?

I'll start telling people i like the name Blackcurrant instead. Then they will be happier if we do call her Jessica!

How about Cassis? Cassie?

Jessica has lovely origins - it's believed to have been invented by Shakespeare (certainly it doesn't appear in writing before The Merchant of Venice). It's just one of those that was a bit over-used for a while, but I think it's less popular now? If you like it, go for it (but don't do what a couple I know did - spell it Jessika to be different. Yuck!!)

I like it, if you do too you should stick with it.

I don't get this obsession with popular/less popular. I would prefer a name I chose to be popular, that would mean lots of people liked it, surely?
