Has Mumsnet ever actually come up with The Name for you?

Am a bit obsessed with the Baby Name section at the moment, due to DD2 being due in the next 3 weeks and not really loving any names.

I have been reading a lot of old thread and you never see what people actually end up using, probably because some people don't want to post their actual children's names (I do, but I name change to do it as my DD's name is fairly unusual).

So has MN ever actually come up with the goods for you? Or has it changed your mind about a name either way?

I find when reading these threads that other people's opinions don't really put me off names I love, but they do make me rethink names I am a bit ambivalent about.

I'm getting obssessed with this section too, my first baby is due in 6 weeks.

So far it hasn't really helped me, a couple of people have been a little dismissive about the name I asked about, but when I then saw a list of names they loved I realised we just have very different taste in names as I didn't like any of their choices either!

I do find it really interesting reading the names that people are considering and love having a good nose!

I have also been amazed at how many people come to regret the name they choose for their child and then are here discussing how and if to change it! Scary!

I do read a lot of threads for ideas but I think DH and I have settled on potential boy and girl names for DC2.

I did a search for one of the names we've picked and found a thread last year where I told the OP it was a silly name and suggested something else Grin I guess my tastes have changed!

DetectivePotato · 31/08/2010 20:32

Nope. I don't like nearly all the boys suggestions on here.

When people know what DS is called, they either say they love it, or its too common (its in the top 5).

I already have my girls name ready so no question about that but have had no inspiration for boys. I read most of them and cringe actually.

seaturtle · 31/08/2010 23:02

I'm not pregnant but I lurk on baby names for fun. And thanks to Mumsnet, if I ever get PG again Leofric and Lilou are up for debate. They haven't been the most popular names on here but I like them, and never heard of them before they were spoken of here.

Ineedsomesleep · 01/09/2010 09:12

No. I just discussed the names with DH and nobody else which is a bit odd as I love this section. It has always puzzled me though why posters ask the opinion of total strangers.

I randomly found DD's name on a different website. It had a section at the bottom saying 'have you considered...' and then a randomly generated name.

I asked about it on mumsnet and got positive feedback, although my chosen pronunciation was questioned. I think if it had been slammed I would have reconsidered as it hadn't yet lodged itself into my mind IYSWIM.

Have since seen plenty of names on here which have grown on me and which I would otherwise never have considered (Rory, for example).

Violet5 · 01/09/2010 10:30

I am pregnant with baby number 6 and was convinced baby would be a girl.
I saw the name Miranda on here and loved it, and thankfully in time i persuaded my husband to like it too.
Only to find out baby is a boy Smile

I have seen names on here i hadn't thought about and its given me an insight into what seems to be popular, or the current name trends.

I've posted names list for peoples opinions before but i wouldn't be totally put of if name i liked got a negative response but it lets me know what the general concensus would be before i announce it to friends or family usually.

If we use Dulcie for this baby then MN will have given us our name

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 01/09/2010 19:51

Again, not pregnant so all a bit hypothetical. But some really fab and crteative names get discussed... it's defiantely a possibility, at the very least for middle names...

Bumperlicious · 03/09/2010 16:36

Ooh I like Dulcie :)

MNet has thrown up a few names that I wouldn't have considered. But I also wonder if it gives a skewed view of how popular a name is. I always think 'Oh Matilda, that's far too popular now' despite not knowing any Matilda's so I must get that impression from here.

YES!
I started a thread yesterday to thank MNers!
My DS was born last Wednesday and we called him Reuben, not a name I would have thought of if I hadn't seen it on a thread here and the only boys name me and DH agreed on.

MamaLazarou · 04/09/2010 11:44

No, but when we had almost decided on our son's name, I did a search on Mumsnet talk to make sure no-one else liked it! If I have another one, I will do the same.

I'm very glad I found this board when I first got pregnant, otherwise I may have gone for other names that I'd thought were very unusual, but which are discussed on here often (for instance, I thought Atticus was my idea, but it seems to pop up on here every few days).

CardyMow · 06/09/2010 17:27

Tuschinski...That was my thread...and even if you HAVE used the name, DS3 is still going to be called that when he is born in January!! Glad to know I'm not the only MN'er that likes it though. Grin.

shitforbrains · 06/09/2010 17:38

I found DS2's name on MN.

I think it's a fab resource and should I be lucky enough to have DC3 I will use it again!

SpooMoo · 24/06/2013 16:23

Yes actually! DH insisted on a particular name - I said we could have it as a nickname but not the "real" name, and MN replies helped me find/confirm DD's name! (I've name-changed since then)

ThreeDaughtersLoveSandwiches · 24/06/2013 16:32

We had already decided on what to call DD3 but wanted different spellings. I asked here and as everyone went with my choice that is what she is now called, not sure I would have listened if they had sided with exH Grin

farmersdaughter · 24/06/2013 18:45

No! As we had already picked it.

But I now have a few extra names on my list, mainly ones that people don't like...haha Wink

raisah · 24/06/2013 22:03

My dds name is becoming popular now but I chose it 3 years ago. Lots of people on nm like it as it is a classic name but not too popular.

zoetstoffen · 25/06/2013 09:04

I first saw my son's name on here. It is suggested here semi-regularly and is a traditional Scottish name, though vanishingly rare. If I hadn't seen it on mumsnet then I have no idea what he would have been called.

Then again, am due another baby soon and her potential name came in for a huge amount of scorn and derision when I posted it on here for opinions, and that hasn't changed my decision on it yet.

Fantail · 25/06/2013 09:48

I ran our 3 finalists through Mumsnet and a certain competitor website and discarded the favourite of that site.

My chosen name was regarded as too jolly hockey sticks"

But we love the name and it suits our daughter perfectly.

Goldenhandshake · 25/06/2013 17:38

Most of the time I don't believe posters actually would ever use some the names they suggest, so many of them I just find ludicrous.

I think whilst there are some genuine people here looking for inspiration or trying to help give inspiration, there are many who just use it to sound out their weirdest fantasy names that they know their OH would scoff at and the rest of their family etc would snigger/make rude remarks about.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 25/06/2013 17:44

Lots of people are positive about the names my children have on here, so I guess it did help in a way. It's reassuring to see people list the names you are thinking of as favourites.

I also posted the name DH wanted - Hunter - because I knew it would go down like a lead balloon and back me up! I do like that style of name though, and DSs middle name is Carter, which I'm sure most of MN wouldn't be keen on.

There was a good thread I was posting on a while ago which came up with our boy name for DC3 - Franklin. Unfortunately, it's a girl so we won't get to use it! But it's a great name all the same.
