Help! My grandmother has got the wrong end of the stick...

I am 20 weeks pg and have just found out the lo is a girl, so am really excited and now able to start thinking about names. The problem is that I rang my 83 year old grandma the other day to let her know, and somehow (a sort of joke gone wrong!) she has got the idea that I want to name the baby after her.... Patricia Mary. She has now rung everyone telling them that she is delighted that the baby will be named for her and that my partner had decided it because he thinks she is so fabulous!! This last bit a total fabrication, but hey - at 83, why let the facts spoil a great story?! I have no intention of naming my baby this - had been considering Mathilda (although still early days) but dont want to upset my sweet grandma, especially as I think this has given her a real reason for going on. What to do??!

Oh my Grin.

Well I agree, you could name your baby Mathilda Patricia Mary (or other first name plus Patricia Mary). A bit of a mouthful but for a good reason!

That's how one of ours got the splendid middle name of Howard (and a friend's dd was landed with Sheila!)

TrillianAstra · 30/08/2010 11:51

When the baby is born, show the baby to her great-granny and say 'doesn't she just look like a Mathilda?' in a gushy voice. Granny will not be able to say no.

Lancelottie · 30/08/2010 11:51

Actually... you could legitimately claim you went for Mattie because it combined her two names so beautifully, and still let you use one from the other side of the family so they didn't feel left out?

travispickles · 30/08/2010 12:01

Wow! Such great ideas!! I simply cannot land my darling firstborn with the nickname Trish. Or Pat!!

Can I just make a suggestion? If you go with Mathilda, please drop the h. Your daughter will spend her whole life saying "it has an H."

TrillianAstra · 30/08/2010 12:09

Spell it however Roald Dahl did for preference :)

If you like the names use them, if not, don´t!

Bugger! My mom got totally caught up in us calling a girl Mary Rose (she just loves mary after her mum) In the end we said we were not going with family names as this will be the first girl on DH's side and only the second on mine and wouldnt be fair. Also mentioned there would have been pressure as due date is close to DH's grans anniversary etc. All went down quite well and she is ok with the notion of us having an independent name. Now have to break it to her that it wont be after a saint! Families eh?
