Edward: is there going to be a Twilight-inspired boom?

So Edward is looking like the most likely option for our DS to be born in November. But I have noticed on a few threads here recently people saying it's going to get more popular, especially with Twilight. One of the things I like about Edward is that it's a really classic name but not that popular.

What do you think? Is it on the rise? Will everyone think I named my DS for a vampire? Grin (At least I think he's a vampire? Haven't seen the books/ films.)

In teenage mums maybe - hopefully not for grownups.

If anyone later thinks that you named your son for Twilight take it as a compliment that you must look young Wink

If anyone was inspired to name their child after a fictional control freak vampire nutcase, I would seriously worry about their maturity and sanity.

Mind you, I was nearly called Regan after the girl in the Exorcist, so who am i to judge.

I think Edward is popular anyway. I wouldn't think of Twilight at all.; Maybe if it was a less common name like Gregory or something i might think twice, but not Edward.

I love the name Edward, so i would say go for it. Twilight will be a passing phase. Edward will stand the test of time being a strong classic boys name.

Such a lovely name and timeless I think.

jellybeans · 26/08/2010 12:40

yes it has definately risen in popularity near me. Every 3rd baby is Edward here. It wasn't that popular a couple of years ago. Top 10 soon I reckon.

I wouldn't worry about being mistaken for a vampire-lover. Nobody thinks of Harry Potter when they meet a boy called Harry (or do they? I don't, anyway). Edward is such a normal classic name that if anyone linked it to Twilight it would say more about them than about you. Don't know if it's going to get more popular though - it is strangely neglected compared to other classic, 'royal' type boys' names, so could be due a revival regardless of Twilight. & Maybe Twilight is helping it sound young again, so... yes.

ooh - Edward is our number one name on our list for boys (baby due in dec) but I am not concerned about Twilight

I think it may be a bit different from back in the day when after Titanic there seemed to be a resurgence in the name Jack because I think generally there feels like parents are harking back to older/more traditional names generally.

I think people talking about a name's rise in popularity is only ever anecdotal, for what it's worth I have an Edward but haven't met any others in our neck of the woods. Even if it is becoming more popular, it's a name with so many abbreviations that I can't help thinking that a lot of them won't be known as Edward, but instead as Ted, Ed, Ned etc.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated. I don't think we will let Twilight put us off then... & will keep my fingers crossed it doesn't have a sudden massive surge here.

Hummmm, a good few Edward's and Isabella's popping up our way but both lovely names so why not.

horatia · 27/08/2010 13:32

It's a classic name so I think it will remain quite popular without being "faddy".

lucertola28 · 27/08/2010 22:57

Edward is a really nice name, as long as you don't name other children Emmet, Jasper etc it won't be that connected to twilight
